2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I need to tow my Jeep to the dealer for a key replacement?

Not if you call us first. Dealers will often tell you to tow the vehicle in, especially on an all-keys-lost situation, because they need it on their lot to do the programming. That tow cost adds up fast and you are still waiting on their schedule after it arrives. We come to you. The programming equipment we carry works through the OBD port at your location. The Jeep does not have to move.

Q: What do I need to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and your registration or title. We also verify the VIN from the dashboard plate or door jamb sticker on the Grand Cherokee to confirm everything matches before we cut or program anything. Same standard a dealer would hold you to, done on site in a few minutes.

Q: Can I buy a replacement fob online and program it myself to my 2005 Grand Cherokee?

This comes up constantly on Jeep forums and the answer is: it depends on whether you still have at least one working programmed key. The 2005 Grand Cherokee has an onboard programming procedure that can add a second fob if you already have one functional key that is recognized by the immobilizer. Owners who have done it describe a sequence using the ignition and the existing key, after which the vehicle enters a learn mode and accepts the new fob.

Q: My 2005 Grand Cherokee starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Is the fob bad or is something wrong with the car?

Usually it is the fob, not the car. On the remote head key setup, the transponder that handles starting and the radio transmitter that handles the remote functions are separate circuits inside the same unit. One can fail while the other keeps working. Start with the CR2032 battery. A cell that reads low voltage but not completely dead will often keep the transponder alive for starting while the remote side drops out entirely.

2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked on Main Street in Downtown Santa Paula on a Tuesday afternoon, finishing up a water bottle, when the call came in. A woman had her 2005 Grand Cherokee in a lot off Harvard Boulevard.

The fob had been acting up for weeks, and that morning it just stopped. No locks, no response on any of the four buttons, and she was not sure if it would even start.

She had already called the dealer. The quote she got back included the key itself, programming labor, and a shop fee. It was a number she described as "way more than I expected for a key."

When I pulled up she was standing next to the Jeep with her phone out, ready to call a tow if I could not sort it. I asked if she had tried a fresh CR2032. She had not. I popped the fob open right there in the parking lot. The battery inside was not just low, it was sitting slightly off-center with a smudge of corrosion on the positive contact. Cleaned the contact, seated a new CR2032, snapped it back together.

All four buttons worked before I even got to my laptop.

The car started. Immobilizer read it fine. She did not need a new key at all.

I still ran a quick function check on every button and checked the start, just to make sure nothing else was going on. Everything was solid. Total time in that lot was under twenty minutes.

She had been a day away from approving a tow and a full dealer visit. The fix was a battery and a clean contact, done in Downtown Santa Paula on her lunch break.
