Out in Limoneira, down one of those long driveways that backs up to the grove, a woman flagged me down almost before I had the van in park. She'd been locked out of a job for two days because her 2003 Grand Cherokee would crank but not catch. New fuel pump, according to the shop that had already touched it.
She handed me the key. The plastic head was cracked clean through and somebody had wrapped it in electrical tape to keep it together. The tape was holding, but just barely. She'd been starting it with the taped-up original ever since, and the housing had finally given up.
I had a replacement key head in the van. Transferred the chip from the cracked housing into the new one, verified the blade profile matched, and ran the onboard add-a-key sequence using her working original to enroll the rebuilt key. Took about twenty minutes total including the walk-around to confirm everything.
The dealer conversation hadn't happened yet, which was the right order of events. She called to ask while I was still there. They quoted her a number that made her put the phone down mid-sentence. She paid a fraction of that, and the car started on the first turn.
