Over in East Santa Paula, a guy had just picked up a 2002 Grand Cherokee from a small private lot off the main stretch. Good shape, fair deal, one key. The seller told him getting a spare would be easy. He took the Jeep to the dealer first, more out of habit than anything else.

We met near the taco shop he was already at. The 2002 Grand Cherokee takes a transponder key with no remote attached, just the key. I matched a blank to his, cut the blade to his existing key, and programmed the transponder so the immobilizer would accept it. On these older Jeeps, if you have a working key already, the job moves fast. Clone the chip data, verify the new key starts the engine, done.
He left with two keys. The thing about having two on this vehicle is practical beyond just convenience. If he ever loses one, adding a third key is a quick job because there's a working key to reference. Lose both and it becomes a longer, more involved process. That second key is real insurance.
