1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Is a locksmith cheaper than the Jeep dealer for a '97 Grand Cherokee key?

Yes, and by a meaningful margin. Dealers on older vehicles still charge shop rates for the time, plus markup on the key blank, and they may want the vehicle brought in. A mobile locksmith handles this in the parking lot, the driveway, wherever the Jeep sits. You save on labor, you save the tow, and you skip the wait.

Q: Does your price include cutting and everything else?

Yes. One price covers the key blank, the cut, and testing in both the ignition and the door lock before I leave. On a 1997 Grand Cherokee there is no programming step, so there are no hidden add-ons to pad the bill. What I quote on the phone is what you pay.

Q: I lost all my keys. Can you still make a replacement without towing the Jeep anywhere?

Yes, and this is actually a common call on older Jeeps. Because the 1997 Grand Cherokee uses a standard metal key, an all-keys-lost situation does not require a scan tool or dealer involvement. I decode the lock cylinder directly from the door or ignition, generate the correct key cut from that, and produce a working key on site. The Jeep stays exactly where it is parked.

Q: My key turns but the ignition feels stiff and grinds a little. Is that a key problem or something worse?

On a '97 Grand Cherokee, a stiff or grinding ignition is usually wear in the cylinder itself, not the key. These vehicles are old enough that the tumblers inside the cylinder wear down over decades of use. A worn cylinder can also start chewing up keys over time, so if your key is showing unusual wear on the cuts, that is a sign. A locksmith can inspect and rekey or replace the cylinder.

1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

She was parked near the Camarillo outlets, over in the Mission Oaks area, when she realized her keys were sitting on the kitchen counter at home. Not lost, not stolen - just sitting there, forty minutes away, and she had places to be.

Her 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee was locked in the lot. She called a couple of dealers first. One told her to tow it in. The other said they'd need to look up the key code on their end and couldn't promise same-day service. Neither option worked for someone standing in a parking lot on a Tuesday afternoon.

I was there in under an hour. The job on a '97 Grand Cherokee is about as clean as it gets. I decoded the lock cylinder right there in the lot, cut a replacement key to match, and tested it in the ignition and both doors. No modules, no scan tools, no waiting for parts to arrive from a warehouse.

She had the key in her hand before she finished her coffee from the drive-through next door. The dealer comparison came up almost as a joke at that point.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How much does a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee key replacement cost?▼

Call us for the exact number, but it is a fraction of what a dealer charges for newer key systems. The 1997 Grand Cherokee uses a standard metal key with no remote or programming involved, which keeps the job simple and the price down. You are paying for the key blank, the cut, and the mobile service to wherever you are in Camarillo. That is it. No separate line items for programming, no module fees, no tow bill.
