2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How does mobile key replacement work for a 2004 Grand Cherokee?

Call me, give me your year, make, model, and VIN. I confirm the right key blank for your vehicle and give you a price before I head out. When I arrive, I verify ownership with your ID and registration, pull the VIN from the dash or door jamb, cut the blade to your vehicle, and program the transponder through the OBD port. I test it with multiple start cycles before I hand it to you.

Q: What do I need to have ready when you arrive?

Three things: your vehicle, a valid photo ID, and proof of ownership such as your registration or title. That is it. I pull the VIN on site to verify the correct key specs. Dealers require the same documentation, but they typically make you gather it before they will even place a parts order, and then you are waiting days before the key is actually ready. I verify everything in minutes and have you driving the same day.

Q: My 2004 Grand Cherokee cranks but will not start. Could it be the transponder key?

Yes, and it is one of the more common things I see on these trucks. A key that cranks the engine but will not let it fire is the classic sign that the ignition cylinder is reading the mechanical cut fine, but the vehicle security system is not seeing a valid chip signal.

Q: Can I program a replacement transponder key for a 2004 Grand Cherokee myself?

These older Grand Cherokees do not have a built-in owner-programmable sequence the way some vehicles from that era did. Adding a new key to the system requires professional programming equipment connected to the OBD port. There is no ignition-turn trick or button sequence that works here. If you bought a pre-cut blank online, you still need someone with the right tools to pair the chip to your vehicle before it will start the engine. The cut alone is not enough.

2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was out in the East Area 2 part of Santa Paula on a Tuesday evening when I got the call. A woman had her only key for a 2004 Grand Cherokee, and the engine would not start.

It would crank fine, battery was good, but it just would not catch and run. She had already called the dealer. They told her to tow it in and plan on leaving it overnight, possibly longer.

She found me while sitting in the parking lot waiting to decide what to do.

I pulled up, verified the VIN, checked her registration. The original key was worn down enough that I could see it had been on a keyring with a lot of weight for years. The chip inside was reading inconsistently on my tester. Not dead, just marginal.

I cut a new key to her vehicle on my machine right there in the lot, programmed the transponder through the OBD port, and tested it. Three start cycles, all clean. The whole visit was under 40 minutes.

She mentioned the dealer quote on the way out. I didn't have to say much. The difference in what she paid versus what they wanted spoke for itself.
