1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: I only have one key left for my '95 Grand Cherokee. Should I get a spare made now?

Yes, and do it while the key still works. If you lose that last one, the job gets harder. With a working key in hand, cutting a spare is quick. Without any key, I have to decode the lock cylinder or pull the key code another way, which takes more time. Getting two keys made in one visit while you still have the original is always the smarter call.

Q: Can I just buy a cheap blank key online and have it cut?

You can, but it is worth being careful about blank quality. The 1995 Grand Cherokee uses a specific keyway, and not every cheap blank sold online is cut to the right profile. A blank that is slightly off will feel like it fits, turn hard, and wear your ignition cylinder faster than it should. I carry blanks that are correct for this vehicle, so there is no guessing when I cut it.

Q: My 1995 Grand Cherokee key turns but the ignition feels loose and grindy. Is that a key problem or an ignition problem?

Probably the ignition cylinder. After 30 years these cylinders wear out, especially if the same key has been used daily or if the keyway picked up dirt and grit over the years. A worn cylinder can make a perfectly good key feel sloppy or make you wiggle it to get the engine to crank. A new key cut to the correct code will sometimes feel noticeably tighter and tell you the cylinder still has life left.

Q: Can a locksmith get me a key if I have no key at all and I don't know the key code?

Yes. A few ways to get there. The key code is sometimes stamped on a tag that came with the vehicle or recorded in old service paperwork. If none of that exists, I can decode the cut directly from the door lock or the ignition cylinder. On a 1995 Grand Cherokee the locks are accessible and this is a well-known process. No tow required, no dealer visit.

1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy over in Sterling Hills in Camarillo called me on a Saturday morning. He had picked up a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee from a private seller the week before and got exactly one key with it. That key snapped off in the door lock the same morning he called. Half in the lock, half in his hand.

He had already called the dealer. They told him to tow it in and mentioned they would need to look at the lock cylinder too. He was not happy about that answer.

I drove out to his place. The broken half came out of the cylinder with the right extractor tool, no damage to the lock. Once I had that, I could decode the cut right off the cylinder and get the correct key code. Cut a new key on site, tested it in the door and the ignition both.

The whole thing took less than an hour in his driveway. He ended up with two new keys instead of one, which I recommended since he was already starting from zero. He saved a good chunk compared to the dealer route, and his Jeep never left the neighborhood.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace a key for a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee?▼

Call a mobile locksmith first. The 1995 Grand Cherokee uses a plain metal key, so you are not paying for chip programming or fob pairing. A locksmith can cut a replacement from the key code on file or decode it directly from your lock cylinder, right where the Jeep is parked. Going to a dealer for a 30-year-old mechanical key is rarely worth the trip or the wait. You pay way less calling us, and the Jeep does not move.
