2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a remote head key and why does it cost more than a regular key?

A remote head key combines two things in one unit: a key blade that turns in the ignition, and a fob built into the head of the key that handles your lock, unlock, and other remote functions. Your 2006 Grand Cherokee uses a five-button version of this. The cost difference comes down to two things. First, the key blade has to be cut precisely to your specific vehicle.

Q: How long does a dealer take to replace a key for a 2006 Grand Cherokee?

Longer than you'd want. Forum threads from Grand Cherokee owners across this generation consistently describe same-day appointments being unavailable, the vehicle sitting at the dealer for hours, and in some cases being told parts need to be ordered before anything can be programmed. A spare key job that takes a locksmith under an hour can stretch into a half-day dealer visit with an appointment lead time on top.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself, or do I still need someone with a tool?

You still need a tool. The 2006 Grand Cherokee does not have a DIY button-sequence or ignition-cycle trick that enrolls a new remote head key. Programming requires a scan tool that communicates with the immobilizer through the OBD port. The fob you bought online can be used, but it won't do anything until it's been enrolled to your specific vehicle by someone with the right equipment.

Q: My 2006 Grand Cherokee starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. Start with the CR2032 battery. On these remote head keys the battery contacts sit in a small tray inside the fob housing, and if the battery shifts slightly or the contacts get any corrosion on them, the remote stops responding before the battery is fully dead. Pop the housing, check the contacts, seat a fresh CR2032 snugly, and retest.

2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a woman over near Nyeland Acres, the laundromat stretch off Saviers. She had a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee and needed a spare key made before a road trip.

She had one working key, which is the good scenario, but she'd been putting it off for months because the dealer told her the car would need to come in, sit for most of the day, and the cost would be steep enough that she kept finding reasons to wait.

Her coworker had used me on a Dodge and handed over my number.

I pulled up that evening while she was folding laundry. She came out, I explained what I was doing as I went. Cut the replacement blade to match, confirmed the cut, then plugged in and ran the add-a-key sequence. The immobilizer accepted the new key without a fight. Both keys tested in the ignition, both remotes tested for lock and unlock. Everything worked.

She said she'd expected it to be a whole production. It wasn't. Thirty minutes, done in the parking lot, and she left with a spare ready for the trip. The dealer comparison came up on its own when she saw how fast it went. I didn't bring it up. She did.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Jeep dealer to get a replacement key for a 2006 Grand Cherokee?▼

No. A mobile locksmith with the right programming equipment can cut and program a remote head key for your 2006 Grand Cherokee on site, wherever the vehicle is parked. This generation doesn't require secure-gateway credentials or a factory dealer account to complete the job. The OBD port is open and a proper scan tool handles the immobilizer enrollment directly.
