2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I was parked on Hueneme Road near the Marina West boat launch when the call came in. Guy had driven his 2007 Grand Cherokee to the marina that morning, walked down to check on his boat, came back, and the key would not turn.
Not stuck, exactly. It would go in, wiggle a little, and then just sit there like it was thinking about it. He had been having the occasional rough start for weeks but chalked it up to the cold mornings. That morning it finally stopped cooperating entirely.
He had already called the dealer in Ventura. They quoted him a new ignition cylinder, a new key, and programming time. He was standing in the parking lot doing the math in his head when someone nearby told him to try me first.
I pulled up and watched him demonstrate the problem. The key was going in crooked, just slightly, and you could feel it catching before the cylinder would accept rotation. The ignition lock itself had worn unevenly. Years of the same key going in the same way, probably with a heavier keychain pulling at it, had let the wafers shift. The cylinder was not dead, just tired.
I decoded the lock, swapped out the worn internals, and cut a fresh blade matched to what the cylinder now wanted. Then I connected through the OBD port and enrolled the new remote head key so the immobilizer recognized it. Tested the ignition, walked all five buttons, checked the range. Everything came up clean.
He asked me what the dealer would have done differently. Honestly, they would have replaced the whole cylinder and charged him for it. Nothing wrong with that approach, but there was nothing wrong with the cylinder housing either. He saved a good chunk and had a better-feeling ignition at the end of it than he had in probably two years.
