Butterfly Beach parking was emptying out by mid-afternoon when I pulled up behind a silver Grand Cherokee sitting off to the side. The owner had been at the beach, came back to a fob that would not unlock the doors. She got in with the emergency blade tucked inside the fob housing, but the push-button start would not respond. The dash was giving her a key-not-detected warning every time she pressed it.
She had already tried holding the fob closer to the start button. That trick sometimes works when the battery is nearly gone, because the antenna on the button itself can read a very weak signal at close range. This time, nothing.
I pulled the fob apart on the hood. The CR2032 inside was not dead - it still had decent voltage - but the positive contact had a slight outward bow, like someone had pried the back off the wrong way at some point and bent it just enough to lose reliable contact. Straightened the clip, cleaned both contact faces, reseated the battery, and the Grand Cherokee recognized the fob immediately.
Then I walked the whole system anyway. Driver handle touch unlock, passenger side, cargo area, push-button start from the seat, lock from outside. All of it. Because if one thing is acting up, sometimes a second thing is waiting to introduce itself.
Everything checked out. She did not need a new fob or a programming visit. She needed the right set of hands and about twenty minutes.
The dealer never even entered the conversation.
