How Commander Key Security Evolved
XK 1st Gen Early
This is where security got serious for the Commander lineup. Your 2006 or 2007 uses a 4-button remote head key with Chrysler's SKIM immobilizer system, which means the transponder chip in your key has to match the vehicle's security module before the engine will turn over. Programming requires an OBD-II tool; there is no simple key-only method for the transponder on these years.
XK 1st Gen Mid
This is where security got a small upgrade. The 2008 Commander moved to a 5-button remote head key, adding hatch and remote start compatibility. It still runs the SKIM immobilizer and needs OBD-II programming for the transponder chip, but the extra button gives you more convenience from the fob itself. Battery is a CR2032.
XK 1st Gen Late
This is where things got a bit easier. The 2009 and 2010 Commanders use an ID46 (PCF7936/PCF7941AT) transponder chip with the same SKIM immobilizer, but programming can be done on-board in some cases. That means faster service and a simpler process for adding keys. You are back to a 4-button remote head key with a CR2032 battery.
Which Key Does Your Commander Use?
A traditional metal key with the remote buttons built into the head. You insert it into the ignition to start the vehicle. Lock, unlock, panic, and hatch buttons on the fob.
Same style as the earlier key but with an extra button for remote start compatibility. Still a physical ignition key, not push-button start.
Looks similar to the 2006-2007 key but uses an ID46 (PCF7936/PCF7941AT) transponder chip inside. Standard ignition, no push-button start on any Commander year.
What Your Commander Key Costs

EZ Car Keyz vs. the Dealer
Over 1,000 five-star Google reviews say it better than we can. Here is how the experience actually compares.
Common Commander Key Problems
Key Fob Programming Lockout
Aftermarket tools like the ProKeyBox lock to a single vehicle after first use. Buy one online for a 2006-2007 Commander already used on another car and it will not work. We carry professional tools without that limitation; non-issue when we handle it.
Transponder Chip Failure
First check is whether SKIM is talking to the key. The remote might lock and unlock fine, but if the transponder chip in the head failed or lost sync, the engine will not crank. Common on high-mileage Commanders. We reprogram or cut a fresh key in Oxnard.
FCC ID Mismatch on Aftermarket Fobs
Remote buttons quit, doors will not respond, battery tests fine. Real culprit is often an FCC ID mismatch. Aftermarket fob with wrong FCC ID for your Commander year fails on remote side even if the transponder fires. We verify FCC compatibility first.
Can You Program a Commander Key Yourself?
You can program the remote lock and unlock functions yourself if you have one working key and an OBD-II programming device. But this does not program the transponder chip that lets the engine start. For full key programming, you need professional tools.
Same situation as the earlier years. Remote button programming is possible with one working key and a plug-in programmer, but the transponder chip still needs professional equipment. The 2009-2010 models support on-board programming, which makes the process faster when we handle it.
