First Generation

2007-2010

You turn this key in the ignition like any other key, but there is a ID46 (PCF7936) transponder chip hidden inside the head that talks to your SKIM module before the engine fires. It is a 3-button remote head key with a standard blade and CR2032 battery. We program it through the OBD-II port using a PIN code, and the whole job takes about 20 to 30 minutes in your driveway.

First Generation Facelift

2011-2013

Jeep updated some electronics here, but the key system stayed the same. Still a 3-button remote head key with a ID46 (PCF7936) chip and SKIM immobilizer. Programming still goes through OBD-II with a 4-digit PIN. If you have a 2011 to 2013, the process is identical to the earlier models.

Second Facelift

2014-2016

This is where the flip key showed up. Same ID46 (PCF7936) chip, same SKIM system, same OBD-II programming method, but the key folds into the fob instead of sticking out. The blade is still standard cut, and the battery is still a CR2032. Functionally nothing changed under the hood for programming.

Start with the key, not the car battery. When you disconnect and reconnect the battery, the SKIM module can lose sync with your transponder keys. If you have two working keys, try cycling each one: insert, turn to ON for 10 seconds, turn off, switch keys, repeat. That sometimes resets the sync.
