2016 Jeep Patriot Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
The call came in from Camarillo Springs, close to nine at night. Guy had been working late, walked out to his 2016 Patriot, and the key just would not register.
The remote head key is the kind where everything is one piece, fob and blade together, so when he said it felt "dead," I asked whether the blade was turning or if the engine just wasn't staying on. He wasn't sure. That matters.
I asked him to try manually inserting and turning. Engine turned over, ran for a second, then cut off. That told me the key blade was fine and the remote functions were still mostly there, but something with the transponder enrollment had gone sideways. Not a total loss situation, but not a battery swap either.
I drove out to the office park off Camarillo Springs Road, set up under the lot lights, and pulled my diagnostic gear from the van. Confirmed the fob was trying to communicate but the vehicle wasn't fully recognizing it as enrolled. Ran the programming sequence through the OBD port, re-enrolled the key, and it held. Took maybe 25 minutes once I was on site.
The thing that slowed us down was finding the OBD port in the dark. It is low and tucked on the Patriot, driver's side under the dash, and the lot had one of those yellow sodium lights that makes everything look the same shade of nothing.
He asked about the dealer after. I told him the dealer would have needed the car towed in, then scheduled, then probably a day's wait. He shrugged and drove home.
