How Renegade Keys Changed Over the Years
Remote Head Key with Sentry Key
Dealer-only programming is the name of the game here. Your 2015 or 2016 Renegade uses a 3-button remote head key with a standard blade that turns in the ignition. The Sentry Key immobilizer verifies the transponder chip before the engine will crank, so a plain metal copy from the hardware store will not start your Jeep.
Smart Proximity Key Arrives
Jeep made a big jump here. Your 2017 or 2018 Renegade gets a 4-button smart proximity key with an ID47 chip, push-button start, and Keyless Enter-N-Go. Programming still requires professional OBD-II tools and dealer-level access to sync the Sentry Key system.
Server Authentication Added
Same smart key and ID47 chip as the prior years, but Jeep added server authentication to the programming process. That means the tool has to connect online during the procedure to verify the new key with Stellantis servers. It takes a few extra minutes, but we handle it on-site with no issues.
Facelift, Same Security
The Renegade got a cosmetic refresh, but the key system stayed consistent. Your 2022 or 2023 still uses a 4-button smart key with an ID47 transponder and push-button start. Dealer-only programming tools are required, which is exactly what we carry on every call.
Which Key Does Your Renegade Use?
A traditional key with buttons built into the head. You insert it into the ignition to start the engine. No push-button start on these years.
A fob that stays in your pocket. Walk up, grab the door handle, and press the start button. There is a hidden emergency blade inside the fob for dead battery situations.
Same smart key as 2017-2018, but programming requires an online server connection during the procedure. Looks and works identically from the driver's seat.
Updated styling on the fob to match the refreshed Renegade, but the same push-button start system and emergency blade inside.
What Your Renegade Key Costs

Common Renegade Key Problems
Key Fob Battery Drain
Renegade owners think the fob is dying when it is a known battery drain. Keyless Enter-N-Go on 2017-2023 constantly transmits, chewing through CR2032s. Replacing every few months is normal. Pop the fob with a coin, fresh CR2032 negative-side up.
Interference with Keyless Entry
First check: battery level. Nine of ten Renegades that will not detect the key at the door handle need a fresh CR2032. Battery fine? Look at RF interference from a phone mount or building security. 2015-2023 sensors need clean signal within five feet.
Transponder Programming Lockout
Sentry Key on every Renegade needs dealer-level tools for transponder sync. Cheap OBD readers will not work, and failed attempts can lock the system out entirely. We carry Autel IM608 and Xhorse VVDI Key Tool Plus for Jeep's Sentry Key protocol.
Can You Program a Renegade Key Yourself?
No self-programming option exists. The Sentry Key immobilizer requires professional OBD-II tools to sync the transponder chip. You need a locksmith or dealer for this one.
The ID47 chip and Sentry Key system require professional programming equipment. There is no on-board procedure you can do at home, even with two working keys.
Same as 2017-2018, plus your year requires server authentication during programming. That means the tool has to connect to Stellantis servers online. Definitely not a DIY job.
No self-programming available. Dealer-level tools and software are required to program the ID47 transponder and sync it with the Sentry Key immobilizer.

Did You Know?
Back in 2014, Jeep did something unusual when they launched the Renegade. They built it on Fiat's Small Wide 4x4 platform, making it the first Jeep ever developed jointly with an Italian automaker. The platform is shared with the Fiat 500X, and despite Jeep's proprietary Sentry Key immobilizer, some of the underlying key fob hardware is actually cross-compatible between the two vehicles.
