Out in Casitas Springs, a woman called me about her 2018 Renegade sitting dead in the driveway. Not dead as in no power, dead as in the car would not recognize the fob at all. She'd tried the backup method of holding the fob against the start button, and the car still wasn't biting. She figured she was looking at a tow to the Ventura dealership and a wait.
I told her to stay put.
When I got there the Renegade was just sitting in the driveway, looking fine from the outside. She handed me the fob and I popped it open before I even plugged anything in. The CR2032 inside was original, still had the little plastic pull tab crease on it. Not the battery she'd swapped thinking it was fresh.
Put in a known-good CR2032, seated it properly, and tried again. Still not reading. At that point I connected my diagnostic equipment and went through the key learning procedure on the vehicle. The old fob data was still in there from what appeared to be a partial attempt somewhere along the way, possibly a dealer visit that didn't finish cleanly. Cleared it out, ran the full learn sequence, and registered the fob fresh.
She stood there watching and asked if the car was "going to remember it." I told her it already did. Tested every button, walked both doors, confirmed the start worked without the backup hold method.
Done in the driveway, done before noon, and she did not have to tow anything anywhere.
