2018 Jeep Renegade
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Is a mobile locksmith actually cheaper than the Jeep dealer for this?

Consistently, yes. Jeep dealers have a habit of billing the fob, the metal blade, the cutting, and the programming as four separate line items. Renegade owners who've gone through the dealer and then talked about it online describe totals that land well above what a mobile locksmith charges for the same outcome. With me you get one price, one trip, done at your location. Most people who call after getting a dealer quote end up saving a good chunk.

Q: Does your price include cutting and programming, or are those add-ons?

One price, everything in. The fob, the blade cut to your vehicle, the programming through the security system, and a full test of every button before I leave. That is the job. The dealer model on these tends to be the opposite: line item the fob, line item the blade, line item the cutting labor, line item the programming labor. By the time you're done you've paid for four things that are really just one job.

Q: My Renegade key fob works sometimes and fails other times. What is going on?

Intermittent recognition on these is one of the more common complaints owners bring up. Nine times out of ten it traces back to the CR2032 battery running low, but not totally dead. The fob will work up close, fail at range, or drop out entirely in cold mornings when battery output dips under load. Some owners also find the battery contact inside the fob has a slight corrosion spot or the battery isn't seated flush after a DIY swap.

Q: Can I buy a replacement fob online and just have it programmed?

You can, but check the factory FCC ID on your original fob before you order anything. The 2018 Renegade uses a specific fob, and aftermarket units sold online vary in quality and compatibility. Some program fine, some don't take at all. If you show up with an incompatible fob, you've paid for something that won't finish the job. I stock the correct fob for this vehicle, so if you want to skip the sourcing risk, just let me bring everything.

2018 Jeep Renegade Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Casitas Springs, a woman called me about her 2018 Renegade sitting dead in the driveway. Not dead as in no power, dead as in the car would not recognize the fob at all. She'd tried the backup method of holding the fob against the start button, and the car still wasn't biting. She figured she was looking at a tow to the Ventura dealership and a wait.

I told her to stay put.

When I got there the Renegade was just sitting in the driveway, looking fine from the outside. She handed me the fob and I popped it open before I even plugged anything in. The CR2032 inside was original, still had the little plastic pull tab crease on it. Not the battery she'd swapped thinking it was fresh.

Put in a known-good CR2032, seated it properly, and tried again. Still not reading. At that point I connected my diagnostic equipment and went through the key learning procedure on the vehicle. The old fob data was still in there from what appeared to be a partial attempt somewhere along the way, possibly a dealer visit that didn't finish cleanly. Cleared it out, ran the full learn sequence, and registered the fob fresh.

She stood there watching and asked if the car was "going to remember it." I told her it already did. Tested every button, walked both doors, confirmed the start worked without the backup hold method.

Done in the driveway, done before noon, and she did not have to tow anything anywhere.
