Over in Thille/Montalvo, I got a call from a nurse who'd bought her 2016 Renegade used from a buy-here-pay-here lot. Single key. She'd always meant to get a spare cut and just never did, the way most people never do until they have to.
She had to.
The fob housing had been cracked for a while, held together with habit more than plastic. One morning before a hospital shift she tried to pull the insert blade free to unlock the door manually, and the blade snapped. Half in her hand, half stuck in the ignition cylinder. The fob body was in two pieces. She had zero working keys and a car that wasn't going anywhere.
When I got there, the first thing I did was deal with the blade in the ignition. Extracted it clean, no damage to the cylinder. Then I looked at what was left of the fob. The housing was destroyed but the transponder chip inside was still intact. That changed the job entirely. Instead of running a full all-keys-lost procedure, I was able to read the chip data from the broken fob directly, which saved a significant chunk of time and kept the cost down for her.
I decoded the lock, cut two new blades, rebuilt the working chip into fresh shells, and verified every button on both fobs before I handed them over. Lock, unlock, and the other two buttons, confirmed on both units.
Forty minutes on-site. She had a spare for the first time since she bought the car. The dealer had quoted her a number she didn't want to think about, and she was looking at a wait on top of that. She made her shift.
