How Durango Keys Changed Over 25 Years
1st Generation (AN)
A simple mechanical key with no transponder chip and no immobilizer system at all. You turn it, the truck starts. No electronics to worry about, no programming needed, and no special equipment required to make a replacement. This is the easiest Durango to make keys for.
2nd Generation (HB)
A transponder key with a Philips Crypto 2 (ID46) chip inside the head and Dodge's SKIM system (Sentry Key Immobilizer Module). That means the key has to electronically match your truck before it will start. Programming is done on-board, but it requires a PIN code and professional tools to get it right.
3rd Generation (WD)
A smart key fob with push-button start, an ID46 chip, and a high-security laser-cut emergency blade tucked inside. Dodge upgraded to the SKIM/W2SKIM immobilizer here, which means programming requires OBD-II access and, on newer models, server authentication through Chrysler. The 2018 and later models also need proxy alignment after programming, which adds a step most shops skip and then wonder why the key does not work.
Which Key Does Your Durango Use?
A plain metal key with no chip and no buttons. If you have a first-gen Durango, this is all you need. We cut it on-site in minutes.
A key with a built-in chip and three remote buttons for lock, unlock, and panic. Your truck will not start without the chip being programmed to match.
A five-button proximity fob that starts your Durango with the push of a button. There is a hidden emergency blade inside for when the battery dies.

Common Durango Key Problems
SKIM Module Failure
Your 2004-2009 Durango cranks but will not start, security light solid. That is usually the SKIM (Sentry Key Immobilizer Module) failing internally. We diagnose on-site, replace if needed, fetch a new PIN, and reprogram in your Oxnard driveway.
W2SKIM Sync Issues
Almost always a battery replacement or failed key programming attempt. When your 2011-2026 Durango's wireless SKIM loses sync, none of your fobs will start the truck. We reset through OBD-II with the correct Chrysler PIN and get everything talking again.
Proxy Key Alignment Failure
First check on a 2018-2026 Durango that will not recognize a newly programmed smart key is proxy alignment. Most shops skip this because it requires WiTech or Autel IM608 with the Chrysler adapter. Without it, the fob and RF hub are not paired.
Fob Battery Drain
Owners think their 2011-2026 Durango fob is dying when it keeps needing CR2032s every few weeks. Usually not the battery. Internal transceiver issue keeps the radio active when it should sleep. We test current draw to tell battery vs new fob.
Can You Program a Durango Key Yourself?
No programming needed at all. These are plain mechanical keys with no chip. We just cut a new one and you are good to go.
No DIY self-programming is available for this generation. The SKIM system requires professional tools and a PIN code to program a new transponder key.
You can sync remote functions using an aftermarket Simple Key programmer tool and one working key. But this only handles the remote buttons, not the full transponder programming. For a complete key, you still need professional equipment.
With one working key, you can sync a new fob's remote buttons using an ignition cycle method: cycle from OFF to ON eight times within 15 seconds, then hold lock and unlock on the new fob. This only pairs the remote functions. Full smart key programming still requires professional OBD-II tools and, on newer models, Chrysler server authentication.

Did You Know?
Back in 1998, Dodge did something unusual with the Durango. They built it on the same frame as the Dodge Ram pickup truck, and it became the fastest-selling SUV in America at launch. While competitors were softening their SUVs with car-based platforms, Dodge went the other direction and gave buyers a body-on-frame truck that could tow like a Ram but seat the whole family.
