A family parked near the harbor end of Downtown Ventura called me on a Tuesday morning. Their 1999 Durango started fine but the remote had gone completely dead. They had one key, one fob, and a road trip the next day.
They had already swapped the battery themselves. New CR2025, same result: nothing. No lock, no unlock, no response at all.
I got there within the hour. Opened the fob on the tailgate and found the tray tab was snapped clean off on one side. The battery was just rocking in there, making contact sometimes, not making it other times. The fresh CR2025 they had installed was good. The housing was not.
Swapped the internals into a new shell with a solid tray, seated the battery correctly, and ran the onboard programming sequence to make sure the module still recognized the fob. Walked all three buttons. Locked, unlocked, tested the third button. Solid range across the parking lot.
They asked about the dealer. I told them the dealer would have quoted a new fob plus labor, taken a few days to get the part, and charged them a good chunk more than what I charged. They had their fob back working the same morning, parked right where they stood.
