How Intrepid Key Security Changed Over the Years
First Generation (LH)
You turn this key in the ignition like any other key. The 1995-1997 Intrepid has no transponder chip; security is handled by the VTSS (Vehicle Theft Security System), which arms based on door cylinder and ignition position, not a chip in the key. No remote buttons on this one, just a plain mechanical key that we cut by code from your VIN.
Second Generation (LH)
Dodge introduced the SKIM system (Sentry Key Immobilizer Module) and gave you a proper 3-button remote with lock, unlock, and panic. The chip is a Texas Crypto 4D (ID4D64), and on-board programming is possible if you have two working keys or the PIN code. Your remote runs on a CR2032 battery, which is cheap and easy to swap.
Third Generation (LH)
Same Texas Crypto 4D (ID4D64) chip and 3-button remote as the second gen, but Dodge tightened the SKIM system. Programming now requires OBD-II access with tools like the Autel IM608 or AutoProPad to read the PIN. The security is more advanced here, which means the dealer charges more, but it also means your car is harder to steal.
Which Key Does Your Intrepid Use?
A standard-looking metal mechanical key. No transponder chip, no buttons, no remote, no battery on these years. We cut by code.
A key with three buttons (lock, unlock, panic) built into the head. The transponder chip and remote are all in one piece, powered by a CR2032 coin battery.
Looks identical to the 1998-2001 key with three buttons and a CR2032 battery, and runs the same Texas Crypto 4D (ID4D64) chip. The difference is under the hood: the SKIM programming is more advanced and requires professional OBD-II tools.

Common Intrepid Key Problems
SKIM Module Failure
Your Intrepid cranks but will not start, security light on or flashing. The SKIM on 1998-2004 models is prone to failure from age and water intrusion. We diagnose with our Autel IM608 and either reprogram or tell you what needs replacing before you spend a dime.
Transponder Chip Wear
Owners think the starter or battery is going bad when the real culprit is a worn transponder. The chip in your Intrepid key degrades, especially on keys from the late 1990s and early 2000s. Intermittent no-starts result. A new key with a fresh chip solves it.
VTSS Arming Issues
The VTSS on 1995-1997 Intrepids gets confused. It fails to arm or disarm correctly, causing false alarms at 2 AM in your Oxnard driveway or a no-start. We check the VTSS module and transponder signal first; sometimes the fix is just reprogramming the key.
Can You Program an Intrepid Key Yourself?
You can program the remote functions yourself on a 1995 Intrepid by accessing the receiver behind the center dash vent and using a jumper wire. This only programs the remote buttons, not the transponder chip. You still need a locksmith for the chip.
No DIY programming procedure exists for 1996-1997 Intrepids. You need a locksmith or dealer with OBD-II tools to program both the transponder and any remote functions.
You can add a new remote to your 1998-2004 Intrepid yourself if you already have one working remote. The process involves a specific button sequence with the ignition on. This only programs the lock, unlock, and panic buttons. It does not program the transponder chip.
Transponder programming on 1998-2004 Intrepids requires a professional scan tool and the vehicle PIN code. There is no reliable DIY method. Attempting ignition cycle tricks without the right tool risks locking out the SKIM module entirely.

Did You Know?
The Dodge Intrepid's LH platform pioneered Chrysler's "cab-forward" design philosophy, pushing the wheels to the corners and the windshield further forward than any American sedan before it. This design gave the Intrepid an unusually spacious cabin for its class and influenced how Chrysler integrated key system components closer to the driver. The same LH platform also underpinned the Chrysler Concorde, Chrysler LHS, and Chrysler 300M.
