2004 Dodge Intrepid
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Is a mobile locksmith actually cheaper than going to the Dodge dealer for this?

Yes, consistently. Dealers bill parts and labor separately, and the programming charge alone can be significant. On top of that, if you have no working key, you're looking at a tow to get the car there in the first place. That's a cost that doesn't exist when a mobile locksmith comes to your driveway in Ellwood. The job gets done where the car already sits, and the total is well below what the dealer route runs.

Q: Does the price include cutting and programming?

Yes. The 2004 Intrepid needs both, and both are in the price. The key has to be cut to match your ignition and door cylinder, and the transponder chip inside the head has to be enrolled to the vehicle's immobilizer. A key that's cut but not programmed will crank the engine and kill it within a second or two. A key that's programmed but cut wrong won't turn the cylinder at all. You need both done right.

Q: I bought a replacement key blank online. Can you just program it, or does it need to be cut too?

Both, usually. If the blank arrived uncut, I can cut it on-site by decoding your existing lock or pulling the key code. If it's already cut, I'll verify the cut is correct before programming, because a bad cut wastes the programming step. One thing to check before I arrive: make sure the blank you bought matches the correct profile for the Intrepid.

Q: My 2004 Intrepid starts for a second and then immediately dies. Is the key the problem?

That crank-and-stall pattern is the classic sign that the immobilizer is not recognizing the transponder in the key. It happens when someone uses an unprogrammed replacement key, a copy cut at a hardware store without chip programming, or sometimes when an existing key's chip has failed. The car starts because the ignition cylinder turns fine, then shuts down because the security system doesn't see a valid signal from the chip. That's a programming job, not a mechanical one.

2004 Dodge Intrepid Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a woman over in Ellwood, off Storke Road near the bluffs, on a Tuesday morning. She'd snapped her only key in the door lock the night before and was standing in her carport with half a key and nowhere to be.

The Intrepid is a sedan from an era that doesn't get a lot of love, but the key system on it is one I know well. Transponder key, no remote, no fob, no buttons. Just a blade and a chip. She'd already called a hardware store and been told they could cut it but couldn't program it, and she didn't know what that even meant.

I pulled the broken piece out of the cylinder with my extractor kit, decoded the cut right there, and had the new key blank cut on my mobile machine in a few minutes. Then the programming. I connected to the OBD port, ran the immobilizer procedure for the vehicle, and enrolled the new key. Turned it over. Started clean on the first try.

She asked if she should get a spare while I was there. She should. I cut and programmed a second one before I packed up. Both keys tested, both starting the car, both done in her carport before she had to leave for work.

The dealer would have been a tow, a wait, and a bill that made the morning worse. She paid way less, and I was gone before 10am.

Dodge Intrepid Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How much does a 2004 Dodge Intrepid key replacement cost?▼

Call us for the current number, but it's going to be a fraction of what the dealer charges. Our price covers the key blank, cutting it to your vehicle, programming the transponder, and mobile service to your location in Goleta. One number, everything included. Dealers break it into parts cost, labor, and programming as separate line items, and that adds up fast before you factor in any towing.
