I got a call from a woman over in Ellwood, off Storke Road near the bluffs, on a Tuesday morning. She'd snapped her only key in the door lock the night before and was standing in her carport with half a key and nowhere to be.
The Intrepid is a sedan from an era that doesn't get a lot of love, but the key system on it is one I know well. Transponder key, no remote, no fob, no buttons. Just a blade and a chip. She'd already called a hardware store and been told they could cut it but couldn't program it, and she didn't know what that even meant.
I pulled the broken piece out of the cylinder with my extractor kit, decoded the cut right there, and had the new key blank cut on my mobile machine in a few minutes. Then the programming. I connected to the OBD port, ran the immobilizer procedure for the vehicle, and enrolled the new key. Turned it over. Started clean on the first try.
She asked if she should get a spare while I was there. She should. I cut and programmed a second one before I packed up. Both keys tested, both starting the car, both done in her carport before she had to leave for work.
The dealer would have been a tow, a wait, and a bill that made the morning worse. She paid way less, and I was gone before 10am.
