Got a call from a guy near Ellwood Butterfly Grove in Goleta. His 2002 Dodge Intrepid wouldn't start. Key turned, engine cranked, nothing caught. The red "key" icon on the cluster was flashing, which on these second-gen Intrepids means the Sentry Key module rejected the transponder signal.
He'd been using the same original key for years. The rubber head was cracked down one side, and when I pulled it out and looked at the transponder pellet, the PCF7936 chip was still seated but the antenna ring around the ignition lock had a corroded connector. Common on these LH-platform cars. Moisture gets in over twenty-plus years.
I cleaned the connector at the SKIM antenna ring, tested signal with my VVDI2, and the original key read fine once the antenna was actually passing data again. Then I cut and programmed a second Y160-PT transponder key as a spare so he wasn't riding on one key anymore. The SKIM module on the 2002 Intrepid lives behind the instrument cluster and stores up to eight key IDs, so adding one with a working key present is quick.
The whole thing took about 35 minutes. He stood there watching the monarchs drift in from the eucalyptus grove the entire time. Barely looked at the car. When I handed him two working keys, he just nodded and said he should have done this three years ago.
