How Charger Key Security Evolved
Sixth Gen (LX Platform)
OBD-II programming makes this one straightforward. Your Charger uses an ID46 transponder chip inside a standard blade key with 3 buttons. The SKIM (Sentry Key Immobilizer Module) checks the chip every time you turn the ignition, and if it does not match, the car will not start. Simple system, reliable results, and quick to program in your driveway.
Seventh Gen Refresh
Dodge kept the ID46 chip and SKIM immobilizer for this generation, so the programming process stays familiar. You still get a standard blade key with 3 buttons and a CR2032 battery in the fob. The platform shifted to LD, but the security architecture did not change much. Still OBD-II, still on-site, still done in under 30 minutes.
Mid-Cycle Refresh
This is where things got serious. Dodge introduced push-button start and switched to a smart key with a laser-cut emergency blade. Your Charger now uses an NXP Hitag AES (ID4A) chip on smart keys, with earlier ID46 keys on lower trims, and the fob has 4 or 5 buttons depending on trim. Programming still goes through OBD-II, but the laser-cut blade requires specialized cutting equipment we carry on every call.
Final Years
Push-button start became standard across most trims. Your Charger runs an NXP Hitag AES (ID4A) chip in a 4 or 5-button smart key with a laser-cut blade. The SKIM system is still in play, and we handle programming through OBD-II. Some 2023 models may require additional server authentication, and we will tell you that upfront before we roll out.
New Generation (LB Platform)
The reborn Charger lands on the all-new LB platform with a fresh key system. You get a proximity smart fob plus an NFC keycard backup and phone-as-key support, all gated by Stellantis secure-gateway server authentication. The laser-cut emergency blade still hides inside the fob for dead-battery days. We authenticate through the secure gateway and program these on-site, same driveway service you expect.
Which Key Does Your Charger Use?
A traditional key that turns in the ignition. The transponder chip inside talks to your SKIM module every time you start the car. Lose the chip communication and the engine will not fire.
Same concept as the earlier generation. Standard blade, 3-button remote, ID46 chip inside. You insert it, turn it, and the SKIM module does the rest behind the scenes.
This is the fob that stays in your pocket. Push-button start, proximity entry, and a hidden laser-cut emergency blade inside the fob for when the battery dies.
Same smart key setup as the 2015-2018 models. Proximity detection, push-button start, and a laser-cut blade tucked inside. The security protocols are tighter on these later years.
The new LB-platform fob. Proximity entry, push-button start, an NFC keycard backup, and phone-as-key support, with a hidden laser-cut emergency blade inside. Pairing runs through Stellantis secure-gateway server authentication, which we handle on-site.

Common Charger Key Problems
SKIM Immobilizer Failures
Owners assume the starter or battery is dead when the real culprit is the SKIM. It verifies your transponder every time. When it fails, no-start even though the key is fine. We diagnose and reprogram the SKIM on-site, or replace if toast.
Worn Key Blade Causing No-Start
First check on a high-mileage Charger with start problems is the key blade. Years of use grind down the cuts and eventually the tumblers cannot read the pattern. A fresh cut solves it, on the spot in Oxnard, Simi Valley, wherever you are.
Remote Fob Battery Drain
CR2032 batteries in Charger fobs drain faster than expected, especially in hot weather. Range drops first, then keyless entry stops responding. Replacing the battery takes 30 seconds; we always recommend a spare CR2032 in your glovebox.
Push-Button Start Module Failures (2015+)
Push-button start works for years, then one morning nothing. The module reading your proximity fob can fail without warning on 2015-2023 Chargers. Workaround: hold the dead fob against the start button. If that works, we reprogram or replace mobile.
Can You Program a Charger Key Yourself?
If you already have two working keys, you can add a third yourself using the ignition cycling method. Insert the first key, turn to ON, wait 3 seconds, turn OFF and remove. Insert the second key within 15 seconds, turn to ON, wait for the chime and immobilizer light. Then insert the new key within 50 seconds. No working keys? That requires OBD-II programming with a SKIM PIN code, which means you need a locksmith.
You can program remote functions yourself if you have at least one working remote. The process involves a specific sequence of LOCK, UNLOCK, and PANIC button presses while the key is in the RUN position. This only programs lock, unlock, panic, and trunk buttons. It does not program the transponder chip.
No DIY option here. Every Charger from 2010 forward requires professional OBD-II programming equipment to add or replace keys. The SKIM system on these years will not accept the ignition cycling method. Call us at (805) 790-8162 and we will handle it on-site.
