A fleet dispatcher for a plumbing company out of Thousand Oaks, over in the Rancho Conejo area, called me on a Tuesday morning. She had a 2013 Dodge Charger that had been showing a key-not-detected warning intermittently for about two weeks. Sometimes it would clear on its own. Then one morning it didn't clear at all.
She'd already been to the dealer. They told her the fob was bad, quoted her a number that made her pause, and said they'd need the car for at least a few days because they were backed up. She didn't have a few days. That car was part of her daily operation.
When I got there, I asked her how long the battery had been in the fob. She didn't know. That's usually the answer. I opened the fob on the hood and the CR2032 inside was reading low enough to explain everything. Swapped it out, reseated the battery tray, and confirmed the contacts were clean.
Tested the fob through the full button set, confirmed the proximity entry was reading on all door handles, and verified the vehicle recognized the key at startup. All of it working again.
She asked if she still needed a new fob. She didn't. Sometimes the fix is a two-dollar battery and a clean contact, done in a parking lot in twenty minutes. The dealer would have enrolled a new key and charged her accordingly for a problem that didn't exist.
I told her to keep a spare CR2032 in the glove box. If it happens again before a year is up, something else is going on. But this one was clean.
