How Grand Caravan Keys Changed Over 25 Years
Third Generation (GS/NS)
This is where Chrysler's security got its start on the Grand Caravan. Chrysler rolled out the SKIM (Sentry Key Immobilizer Module) in 1998. Your 1998-2000 key is a plain metal blade with a Texas Crypto 4D (ID4D64) transponder chip inside, no buttons, no remote. The SKIM reads that chip every time you turn the ignition, and programming uses an OBD-II PIN pulled from your VIN.
Fourth Generation (RS)
Dodge combined the key and remote into one piece here, giving you a remote head key with an ID46 chip and three buttons for lock, unlock, and panic. It still uses the SKIM system and a standard blade, so cutting is straightforward. The CR2032 battery powers the remote side, but the transponder chip works without any battery at all.
Fifth Generation (RT)
This is where security got serious. Your Grand Caravan switched to a flip key with a high-security blade that requires a precision cutter like the Silca Futura. The ID46 chip and SKIM system carried over, but the blade design means a hardware store cannot duplicate it. Later models from 2015 onward may also need Chrysler server authentication for programming.
Which Key Does Your Grand Caravan Use?
A simple metal key with a hidden transponder chip inside. No buttons, no battery. It looks basic but your van will not start without the chip being recognized.
Your key and remote are built into one piece. Three buttons on the back handle lock, unlock, and panic. The transponder chip is in the key head, and a CR2032 battery powers the remote functions.
The blade folds into the fob body when not in use. It has a high-security cut pattern that requires specialized equipment. Same three buttons and CR2032 battery as the previous generation, but the blade is completely different.
Pricing by Generation
Every price includes the key blank, cutting, programming, and testing; lockouts run $95 to $125.

Common Grand Caravan Key Problems
SKIM Module Failure
The Sentry Key Immobilizer Module in your 1996-2010 Grand Caravan can fail without warning. The van will not recognize any key, even ones that worked yesterday. We test the SKIM on-site and can reprogram or replace it in your Oxnard or Camarillo driveway.
Transponder Chip Recognition Loss
First check when your 2001-2020 Grand Caravan cranks but will not start: is the SKIM seeing the chip? Sometimes the antenna ring loses signal, the chip degraded. We bring diagnostic tools on every call so we pinpoint the cause before recommending anything.
Remote Key Fob Battery Drain
Your 2008-2020 flip key remote stops locking from a distance and you assume the fob is broken. Nine in ten times, it is a dead CR2032 or contact corrosion. A quick swap fixes it. Still no response? The remote may need reprogramming, which we handle on-site.
Worn High Security Blades
Owners think the ignition is going bad when the real problem is a worn blade. The high-security cuts on your 2008-2020 flip key wear, especially on a heavy keychain. Intermittent no-starts result. A fresh blade on a precision machine fixes it.
Can You Program a Grand Caravan Key Yourself?
No DIY option here. These early Grand Caravans require professional OBD-II programming equipment and a dealer PIN to add any key. Call us and we handle it on-site.
If you have two working keys already, you can program a third one yourself using Chrysler's two-key sequential method. You cycle each existing key in the ignition for 3 to 15 seconds, then insert the new key and wait for the chime. This only programs the transponder, not the remote.
You can program the remote keyless entry functions yourself if you have two working keys. The procedure involves cycling keys in the ignition and waiting for the EVIC display to confirm. But this only programs the remote buttons. The transponder chip still needs professional OBD-II programming to start the engine.

Did You Know?
The Dodge Grand Caravan pioneered the Stow 'n Go seating system in 2005, letting you fold the second and third row seats flat into the floor without removing them. But while the interior kept evolving, the key system stayed loyal to Chrysler's SKIM immobilizer from 1996 all the way through the final 2020 model year. Twenty-four years of the same basic security architecture is pretty rare in the auto industry.
