Got a call from a woman over in the College Area in Ventura. Her 1996 Grand Caravan had one key left and it was getting hard to turn in the ignition. She said she'd been jiggling it for weeks and finally the cylinder felt like it was about to give up on her.
I asked for the VIN over the phone to confirm the keyway. Y157, no transponder, no immobilizer. Grabbed my Lishi Y157 pick/decoder and a couple of blank key cuts and headed out.
When I got there she had the van parked in her driveway with the key stuck in the ignition, turned halfway. Classic sign the wafers inside the cylinder are worn flat. I wiggled it free, decoded the lock on the driver door instead since that cylinder was in better shape, and cut two fresh keys on my mobile machine.
Both keys turned the ignition smooth. No binding, no jiggle. She turned it on and off about four times like she forgot what easy was supposed to feel like.
I mentioned she could have the ignition cylinder replaced down the line if it kept getting worse, but for now the fresh-cut keys matched the original depths and the cylinder cooperated. She asked if the dealer could have done the same thing. Sure, but she'd be waiting days for an appointment and paying a lot more for the same ten-minute cut.
