I got a call from a guy parked near the Funk Zone on a Tuesday evening. He was in town for a few days, staying close to the waterfront, and his fob had been acting up the whole drive down from the Central Valley. By the time he parked, the van would not acknowledge the key at all. Doors wouldn't respond to the fob. He'd already tried holding it closer to the door handle, tried the backup start position near the ignition area, tried everything he'd read online. Nothing.

The CR2032 inside tested weak on my meter, not dead but not healthy either. The contact plate had a slight upward bow on the positive side, probably from the battery being pried out at some point rather than popped correctly.
I straightened the contact, seated a fresh CR2032, and held the fob near the door handle.
Nothing. Still no response.
That told me the battery and contact weren't the only issue. I connected to the OBD port with a tool that has the right access for the 2018 gateway architecture and pulled the module data. The fob's registration had dropped out, which does happen on these vans, especially when the battery runs low enough that the module loses the pairing record during a power event.
Re-enrolled the fob on site. Verified all seven buttons, walked both sliding doors, checked the liftgate response, confirmed the ignition recognized the key in proximity. The whole job was done before he finished his coffee from the place across the street.
He asked what the dealer would have taken. I told him honestly: appointment lead times at most CDJR stores right now are running days out, not hours, and the job itself usually requires the van to sit. He was back on the road that same night, which is the only thing that actually mattered to him.
