Got a call around 9:15 at night from a guy at the 24-hour laundromat lot over in Midtown, Ventura. His 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan would not turn over after his janitorial shift ended. He had another building to clean by midnight and no time for a tow to a dealer that was already closed.
I pulled up and started with the basics. Key turned in the ignition, dash lights came on dim, starter clicked once and quit. Classic weak battery behavior. His dome light had been left on and the battery had drained down to about 9 volts.
Here is where it matters what generation you are dealing with. His '98 Grand Caravan had a plain mechanical key, Y157 keyway, no transponder chip. The VTSS alarm module under the dash had tripped into lockout because the voltage dropped so low during cranking that the body computer saw it as a fault. I put a jump pack on the battery terminals, let the system stabilize for a couple of minutes, cycled the key off and back on, and the VTSS reset itself. Van fired right up.
He sat there for a second with his hands on the wheel like he was waiting for it to stall again. It did not.
No programming, no module reflash. Just a dead battery pretending to be something bigger. I cut him a spare Y157 key on the spot from his existing original so he would have a backup in his wallet. He made it to his next building on time.
