A guy in Matilija called on a Tuesday morning. His 2001 Grand Caravan was sitting in the driveway and going nowhere. He had one key left, and it snapped at the bow, right where the plastic head meets the blade. The blade half was still in his pocket, the head with the chip was on the floor somewhere inside the van.

I pulled up, got a look at the remaining blade piece, and decoded the cut from it rather than pulling the door lock. Clean read. Ground the blade down to a point so I could handle it without slicing myself, noted every cut position, and got to work on a fresh blank.
The transponder enrollment on these went through the OBD port. The van's immobilizer held the existing key data, I extracted the PIN, and wrote the new key into the system. When there's already a working key, the onboard sequence is an option, but with only a broken blade and no intact working key to insert, the tool route was the right call.
First turn, it fired. Held the idle steady, no cut-out, no warning light. He leaned in the window and watched the dash like he was waiting for it to change its mind. It didn't.
He made the two o'clock thing. I don't know what the thing was, but that part worked out.
