One thing worth knowing on the 2007 Grand Caravan: these remote head keys take some stress over time because the key blade and the fob body are one unit. The weight of the fob hangs off the blade in the ignition, and after years of that, the blade shank can fatigue at the collar. If your shell is also cracked but the internal electronics are still intact, I can often move the board into a fresh shell and save you the cost of full reprogramming. The remote side handles your lock, unlock, and other buttons. The transponder side talks to the immobilizer every time you turn the ignition. Those two functions share the same battery and the same housing, but they're independent systems. The van doesn't care if your remote buttons work in order to start. It only cares that the transponder is recognized. That distinction matters when you're diagnosing a problem, because a dead remote doesn't mean the key itself has failed.

My Grand Caravan is showing a key-not-detected warning. Where do I start?

Start with the CR2032. A weak battery is the most common reason for this on a remote head key setup, and it's also the most skipped step because people assume a key that still starts the van must have a good battery. Not always true. The transponder can still get enough power to authorize the start while the remote signal is already degraded.

Pull the battery, check the contacts for any corrosion or debris, and seat a fresh CR2032 firmly. If the warning clears and the remote range comes back, you're done.

If a new battery doesn't help, the next question is whether the van starts at all. If it starts but the warning stays on, that's different from a no-start situation. No-start with that warning usually means the immobilizer isn't seeing the key, which could be a failed transponder or a programming issue. Either way, that's when you call me rather than keep cycling the ignition.

I bought a replacement remote head key online. Can I program it myself to my 2007 Grand Caravan?

The remote portion and the transponder portion work differently here, and that matters for DIY.

The remote keyless entry side can sometimes be self-programmed on this generation using an onboard procedure, but it only works under specific conditions: you need a currently working programmed key, and you have to enter the procedure correctly within a set time window. A lot of owners find it finicky and give up partway through, which can make things worse.

The transponder chip side is a different story. That requires professional diagnostic equipment to write the key into the immobilizer. There's no ignition-turn sequence or button trick that handles it. If you've already bought the key online, I can program both sides on-site. Just don't attempt the transponder side yourself, and if you try the remote procedure and it doesn't complete cleanly, stop and call me before trying again. A partial attempt is harder to clean up than a fresh start.

How many keys can the 2007 Grand Caravan hold in memory, and does adding a new one erase the old ones?

This generation can hold multiple keys in the immobilizer memory. Adding a new key through the proper procedure does not erase your existing ones, as long as the process is done correctly and completed fully.

The problem is an incomplete programming attempt. If the sequence is started and not finished, the module can end up in a state where it's uncertain about all the keys, including the ones that were working before. That's exactly the situation the van in Hueneme Beach was in when I got there. The fix is clearing the fault state, resetting to baseline, and running the full sequence from scratch with all keys present. If you're planning to add a spare, have all your current keys with you when I come out. It's faster and cleaner to do them all in one session.
