Over in the Surfside Drive area in Port Hueneme, a trade school student was stuck at his girlfriend's house with a 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan that wouldn't recognize any key. Another locksmith had already tried to program a Fobik to it, failed partway through, charged him for "the attempt," and told him to take it to the dealer.
He found me through Google and called. Upfront about being nervous and broke.
I plugged my IM608 into the OBD port and saw the problem right away. The WIN module had a stack of fault codes from the incomplete programming, DTC B2204 (Transponder Key Programming Failure) and B210A (Key Not Learned). The previous tech had forced a Fobik procedure, which is the wrong key type for this van entirely. The 2007 Grand Caravan uses a remote head key with an M3N5WY72XX FCC ID and a 4D transponder, not a Fobik. Different protocol, different hardware.
I cleared the codes, verified the WIN was back to baseline, then ran a clean Dodge key learning sequence from scratch. Once the transponder registered, I walked every one of the six buttons: lock, unlock, left slide, right slide, hatch, panic. Showed him the confirmation on my screen so he could see it was fully learned.
The van started clean. He just sat there for a second with his hands on the wheel, like he was making sure. I didn't charge extra for the cleanup. Cleaning up someone else's mess is part of doing the job right.
