2000 Dodge Grand Caravan
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a "remote" key on the 2000 Grand Caravan, and what does it do?

It's a single unit that handles two separate jobs. There's a transponder inside that communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer system so the engine will start. And there are three buttons for remote locking, unlocking, and the third function. Both have to work for the van to operate normally. The remote takes a CR2016 battery.

Q: Why does the dealer charge so much when the actual programming only takes a few minutes?

Dealerships bill in time blocks regardless of how long the actual task takes. A tech who spends four minutes programming a fob still gets written up under a flat-rate labor category, and the service advisor adds diagnostic fees on top. The fob itself carries dealer markup. None of those costs reflect the literal minutes the tool was plugged in. A mobile locksmith prices the job as a job.

Q: Can I program a replacement fob for my 2000 Grand Caravan myself at home?

There is a known owner-accessible procedure for this generation of Caravan that involves cycling the ignition and using the door lock switch in a specific sequence to put the system into programming mode. Some owners have reported success with it. The catch is that it works for adding a fob to the system when you already have a working programmed key present. All-keys-lost is a different situation and typically needs a professional tool to get back in.

Q: The shell on my fob is cracking apart. Do I need a whole new programmed remote or can the internals be reused?

Reuse the internals. The circuit board and the transponder inside that cracking shell are already married to your van. A replacement shell costs almost nothing, and if the board is intact, a locksmith can transfer everything over and cut a matching blade to fit the new housing. You walk away with a remote that works exactly like it did before, just without the rubber band holding it together.

2000 Dodge Grand Caravan Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

She had a window of about 45 minutes. That was it. Her boys were inside the karate studio on the East End side of Ojai, and when those doors opened she needed to be ready to move.

She had called me two days before, not in a panic, just practical. The shell on her 2000 Grand Caravan remote was cracking at the seam where the blade meets the housing. She'd wrapped it in a rubber band to keep it together. It was still working, barely, but she knew it was close.

The dealer had told her to drop the van off for a few hours. She has one vehicle. Two kids. No drop-off window anywhere in her week.

I pulled into the studio lot just before 4:30. She walked out to meet me before I even got parked.

I decoded the lock, transferred the electronics from her cracked shell into a fresh housing, cut a replacement blade to match, and ran the programming through the OBD port. The factory fob ID tested clean on all three buttons once it was seated in the new shell. Nothing was wrong with the board. It just needed a home that wasn't held together with a rubber band.

The boys came out in their gis while I was doing a final button check. She was already holding the working remote. They climbed in and immediately asked about chicken nuggets. They had no idea anything happened, which is exactly how it should go.

The dealer quote was real, and the scheduling window was real, and neither one worked for her life. A parking lot in Ojai worked just fine.

Dodge Grand Caravan Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does the Dodge dealer actually take for a key replacement on one of these?▼

The programming itself takes minutes once a tech is connected. That part is fast. Everything wrapped around it is not. CDJR service departments are frequently booked two to three weeks out for non-emergency appointments. Owners on forums report waiting over a week just to be seen, then additional days or weeks if the fob isn't sitting on the shelf. The van has to be there in person for programming, which means you're without it for however long that process takes.
