How Dodge Nitro Keys Changed Over the Years
First Generation Launch
Dodge built the Nitro on the PM/MK platform and gave it a 3-button remote head key from day one. Your key has lock, unlock, and panic buttons with a standard cut blade that turns in a traditional ignition. The SKIM immobilizer system talks to the transponder chip in your key head, and programming happens through the OBD-II port under your dash.
First Generation Facelift
Dodge freshened up the exterior and interior for 2009, but the key system stayed the same. Still a 3-button remote head key, still SKIM immobilizer, still OBD-II programming. The FCC IDs carried over too: KOBDT04A, OHT692427AA, and OHT692713AA. If you are buying an aftermarket blank, match one of those numbers and you are good.
Final Production Year
The 2011 was the last Nitro Dodge ever made, and the key system remained consistent through the end. Same 3-button remote head key, same SKIM immobilizer. Some 2011 models came with remote start capability through the fob, which is a nice bonus if yours has it. Programming is identical to every other Nitro year.
Which Key Does Your Nitro Use?
This is a traditional key with remote buttons built into the head. You insert the blade into the ignition to start the car. No push-button start, no proximity sensor.
Same remote head key as the earlier Nitros. The fob and blade are one piece. Your buttons handle lock, unlock, and panic. Some models may have a remote start function on the third button.
The final year Nitro uses the same remote head key. If your vehicle came with factory remote start, the third button handles that instead of panic. Either way, same key blank, same programming.
How Much Does a Dodge Nitro Key Cost?
Price includes the key blank, cutting, transponder programming, and remote programming, all done on-site at your location.
EZ Car Keyz vs. the Dealer
Same OBD-II programming, same result. The difference is the quality of the experience and what you pay for it.
Common Dodge Nitro Key Problems
Key Fob Programming Lockout
Aftermarket OBD-II programmers like ProKeyBox lock to a single VIN after first use. A tool bought online only works on one Nitro, ever. Tried a consumer tool and locked out? Call (805) 790-8162. We carry professional gear without the VIN lock.
Transponder Synchronization Failure
New key turns in the ignition but the engine cranks and dies. The SKIM does not recognize the chip. Happens when the blade was cut but the chip never programmed. Common in Simi Valley with online keys. Proper OBD-II sync takes 20 minutes.
Remote Start Incompatibility
Owners assume their aftermarket remote start stopped because of a bad fob. Usually not the fob. The Nitro requires all doors and the hood fully closed before remote start engages, and aftermarket kits add their own requirements. We check fob signal first.
Can You Program a Nitro Key Yourself?
If you already have two working programmed keys, you can add the remote lock, unlock, and panic functions to a new key yourself using an ignition cycle procedure. But the transponder chip, the part that actually lets the engine start, requires OBD-II programming with professional tools. So you can get your buttons working at home, but you still need us to make the key actually start your Nitro.

Did You Know?
Back in 2007, Dodge gave the Nitro a party trick that was ahead of its time for a compact SUV. The 3-button key fob could remote start the engine from up to 300 feet away, letting it run for a full 15 minutes as long as the hood and all doors were closed. On a cold Ventura County morning, that meant a warm cabin before you ever stepped outside.
