A traveling construction worker staying at a motel near Bart's Books in Ojai called me late one evening. He was two states from home on a job, and his only key for the 2010 Dodge Nitro had stopped turning in the ignition. The blade was visibly worn down on the high cuts. He'd been wiggling it for weeks.
The dealer told him to tow it in, and maybe they'd get to it the next afternoon. He found me online instead.
I met him in the motel lot that same night. Pulled the key out, examined the blade, and yeah, the tip was rounded off enough that it was barely catching the last two wafers. The remote housing with FCC ID OHT692427AA was still in decent shape, buttons worked, CR2032 had life. So the fix was a fresh key blank with the right Y160-PT profile, cut to code on my machine in the van, and then programming the new 4D transponder chip through the OBD-II port to the SKIM module.
The programming side took about 20 minutes. The SKIM needs to learn each new key's transponder signature, and once it pairs, the old worn key still works too since I didn't wipe it.
He sat on the motel curb scrolling his phone while I worked. When I handed him the new key and it fired right up, he just nodded and said "alright." Drove to his jobsite the next morning. The whole thing, blank to programmed and tested, was a fraction of what the dealer quoted, with no tow and no waiting around.
