How Dodge Neon Keys Changed Over the Years
1st Generation (PL)
Your first gen Neon uses a plain mechanical key with no chip, no transponder, and no immobilizer. It is the simplest key Dodge ever made. We cut it to your locks right at your car, no programming needed.
1st Generation Late (PL)
Your late first gen Neon introduced the Sentry Key Immobilizer Module, or SKIM. The key now carries a Texas Crypto 4D (ID4D64) transponder chip that talks to your car before it will start. Still a standard blade with no buttons, but it needs OBD-II or on-board programming with a PIN code.
2nd Generation (PL)
Your second gen Neon kept the Texas Crypto 4D (ID4D64) chip and SKIM system, but added a 3-button remote head key on SE and ES trims. The fob takes a CR2032 battery. Programming still goes through OBD-II or on-board with the SKIM PIN.
2nd Generation Update
Your 2003 to 2005 Neon, including the SRT-4, uses a Texas Crypto 4D (ID4D64) chip with the same SKIM immobilizer. The 3-button remote head key and CR2032 battery carry over. Late models may require server authentication for programming, which we handle through our OBD-II tools on-site.
Which Key Does Your Neon Use?
A simple metal key with no electronics. It turns your ignition and unlocks your doors, and that is all it needs to do.
Looks like a regular key but has a hidden chip inside the plastic head. Your car will not start without the right chip talking to the SKIM module.
A transponder key with lock, unlock, and panic buttons built into the head. The remote controls your door cylinders; the chip inside lets the engine start.
Same 3-button layout as the earlier second gen, still running the Texas Crypto 4D (ID4D64) transponder chip. The SRT-4 uses this same key system.
The Real Cost of a Neon Key

Common Dodge Neon Key Problems
SKIM Module Failure
First we check the SKIM, mounted near the ignition. Corrosion and internal faults are extremely common on 1999-2005 Neons, in cars that have sat. If the module is dead, no new key fixes the no-start. We program a replacement module and keys right there.
Transponder Key Wear
Owners think the Neon has an electrical problem when it cranks but will not fire. Real culprit is a worn transponder in the head. After 20+ years, the Texas Crypto 4D (ID4D64) chip fails intermittently. We cut a fresh blade and clone or replace the chip.
Remote Fob Battery Drain
Your 2000-2005 Neon's remote buttons stop locking, but the car still starts. CR2032 dying or moisture inside the fob. The 3-button fobs are not sealed well; water ingress kills the board. We replace the battery, test the fob, swap the housing if needed.
Ignition Cylinder Binding
Worn ignition tumblers cause the key to stick or refuse to turn. Hits every Neon generation 1995-2005, worse with high mileage. We extract a stuck key safely, rebuild or replace the cylinder, and cut a fresh key to match in Camarillo or Thousand Oaks.
Can You Program a Neon Key Yourself?
No programming needed or possible. This generation uses a plain mechanical key with no chip. You just need it cut to match your locks, which requires a locksmith or dealer.
The SKIM system requires a 4-digit PIN and professional programming tools. There is no DIY on-board procedure for the transponder chip. You need a locksmith with the right equipment.
Transponder programming requires professional tools and the SKIM PIN. However, if you already have one working remote, you may be able to add additional remotes using the unlock and panic button sequence. That only pairs the remote buttons; it does not program the transponder chip.
Same situation as the earlier second gen. The transponder chip needs professional OBD-II programming with a PIN. If you have a working remote, you can pair additional remotes at home: turn ignition to RUN, hold UNLOCK for 4 to 10 seconds, press PANIC for 1 second, release both, wait for the chime, then press any button on each remote within 30 seconds. That is remote buttons only, not the immobilizer.

Did You Know?
Most people do not know this: the Dodge Neon SRT-4, the 230-horsepower turbocharged pocket rocket from 2003 to 2005, used the exact same SKIM immobilizer system as the base model Neon. Dodge bolted on a turbo, upgraded the suspension, and added aggressive bodywork, but never touched the key security. It made the SRT-4 one of the easiest performance cars of its era for a locksmith to work on.
