Got a call from a guy in Upper Village, Montecito. Trade school student, at his girlfriend's place, locked out of his 1999 Dodge Neon. He was upfront about the situation. Another locksmith had already come out, told him the car needed a transponder key programmed, charged him for the attempt, failed, and told him to go to the dealer.

I pulled up, checked the door, and picked it open in about two minutes. Then I decoded the lock cylinder and cut a fresh Y159 key blank right from my van. Slid it into the ignition, turned it, and the 2.0L SOHC fired right up.
He just stood there for a second. Then he asked me if I was sure it was done. I showed him the key working in the door, the trunk, and the ignition. Three for three.
The dealer wanted to schedule him days out and would have charged a good chunk more for something that took me about fifteen minutes curbside. He did not need programming. He did not need a transponder. He needed a key cut by someone who knew what his car actually has in it.
