1999 Dodge Neon
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What kind of key does a 1999 Dodge Neon use?

A straight metal key, nothing else. No chip inside, no remote, no fob battery. It's a cut key that turns in the ignition cylinder and the door locks, and that's the whole system. Replacement means cutting a new key to match your vehicle, either by reading a working key, decoding the lock, or pulling the key code another way. No programming, no scan tool, no dealer visit required.

Q: My 1999 Dodge Neon won't start and I can't figure out why. Could it be the key?

On a 1999 Neon with a standard metal key, the key itself is either cut correctly or it isn't. If it turns in the ignition and the engine doesn't crank, the key is not the source of the problem. Check the battery, the starter, and the neutral safety switch first. Those are far more common culprits on a vehicle this age.

Q: I lost my only key to my 1999 Neon. Can you make one without a spare?

Yes. All-keys-lost on a vehicle like this is one of the simpler scenarios I handle. A few options: I can decode the door lock or ignition cylinder directly to get the cut, or in some cases pull the key code through other means. No original key needed. I cut the replacement on site and you're driving.

Q: The ignition on my 1999 Neon is stiff and sometimes the key gets stuck. Is that a locksmith problem or a mechanic problem?

Honestly, it's a locksmith problem first. A stiff or sticky ignition cylinder on a late-nineties vehicle is almost always wear inside the cylinder itself, worn wafers or a dry, gummed-up plug. A locksmith can inspect it, clean it, and in many cases recondition or rekey it without pulling the whole steering column.

1999 Dodge Neon Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy in Birnam Wood, Montecito. He'd moved in with a family member and the only key to his 1999 Dodge Neon had snapped in the door lock. Half of it was still in there.

He'd already tried the needle-nose-pliers approach. Tried superglue on a thin rod. The broken piece wasn't going anywhere on its own, and now the door lock was getting scratched up from the attempts.

I came out with my extraction kit and worked the fragment out of the cylinder without pulling the lock apart. Once it was out, I measured the cuts and made him a replacement key right there on the street. He watched the whole thing from about two feet away, the way people do when they're surprised the process is that quiet and that fast.

He mentioned a dealer had quoted him a wait and a tow, since he couldn't drive anywhere with a locked door and no key. I finished the job on site in under an hour. He paid a fraction of what that route would have cost and drove himself home.

Dodge Neon Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?▼

Yes, broken key extraction is a standard call for me. I carry the tools to pull a broken piece from an ignition cylinder without damaging the barrel. On a 1999 Neon, these cylinders are old enough that some wear is expected, so I check the cylinder condition while I'm in there. Once the fragment is out, I can measure the cuts and produce a replacement key on site.
