1996 Dodge Neon MECHANICAL-KEY Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out in Montecito, near San Ysidro Ranch, a military family on a PCS move had pulled over with a loaded U-Haul early in the morning. Their 1996 Dodge Neon was hitched behind it, and somewhere between the last house and this parking spot, the only key to the Neon vanished. Probably buried in a box in the back of the truck under a couch and three duffel bags.
They had base housing expecting them that afternoon. Unloading the entire truck onto a parking lot to dig for one key was not an option.
I got there within the hour. The 1996 Neon is a first-gen PL body, no transponder, no immobilizer, just a plain Y149 mechanical lock. I decoded the driver door cylinder with my Lishi MIT1 pick and read the cuts right off the wafer stack. Cut a fresh Y149 blade on my mobile machine and tested it in the door, the trunk, and the ignition. Turned over clean on the first try.
The whole thing took maybe 20 minutes from the time I opened my kit. The dad just stood there watching like he expected it to be harder than that.
I told them if they ever find the old key buried in a moving box six months from now, it still works. Nothing got erased because there is nothing to erase. It is a mechanical key and the car does not care how many copies exist.
They were back on the road well before noon. Sometimes the best part of this job is keeping someone else's deadline intact.
