Got a call from a guy near Oxnard Skate Park. He was sitting in the parking lot of a barbershop, Neon wouldn't start. Key turned, fuel pump primed, starter cranked, but the engine would catch for half a second and die. Classic SKIM rejection. The red dot security light on the cluster was flashing steady, which told me everything before I even touched the car.
He had one key. The plastic head was cracked almost in half and you could see the transponder chip shifting around inside the housing. The PCF7936 wasn't dead, it was just moving out of read range every time he jiggled the ignition.
I pulled the chip, set it in a new Y160-PT shell, and cut a fresh blade on my Condor XC-Mini using his original as a reference. The 8-cut keyway on these Neons is simple but it still needs a clean cut or the wafers bind. Seated the chip, tested the start. Fired right up, security light went solid then off after two seconds, exactly how it should behave when the SKIM accepts the transponder handshake.
Then I made him a full spare while I was there. Two working keys, both tested with three clean start cycles each.
He said he had been nursing that cracked key for over a year. A year of hoping it would hold together one more turn. Now he has two and neither one is taped.
