A guy near Butterfly Beach in Montecito called about his 1997 Dodge Neon. Said he was down to one key and it was getting hard to turn in the ignition. He wanted a spare before the original gave up completely.
He had already called a dealer. They told him they would need to see the car, mentioned something about programming, and quoted a wait time that sounded like a week. For a plain mechanical key on a 97 Neon. No chip, no transponder, no immobilizer module. Just a brass Y157 blank and a lock cylinder.
When I got there he was standing next to it with his arms crossed, holding the original key out like evidence. I looked at it under my light. The cuts were worn down on the first two positions, almost rounded smooth. That is why it was binding. The wafers in the ignition were reading a profile that barely matched anymore.
I pulled the key code from the door lock, cut a fresh Y157 to factory specs on my mobile machine, and had him try it. Turned like new. He stood there for a second just rotating it back and forth in the ignition, feeling the difference.
Made him a second spare while I was at it. Two clean-cut keys, done on site, for a fraction of what the dealer was going to charge for one key and a bunch of waiting around.
