How Dodge Stratus Keys Changed Over the Years
First Generation (JA Platform)
A plain mechanical key with no transponder chip and no immobilizer. You turn it, the car starts. No programming needed, no electronics to worry about. This is the simplest and cheapest Stratus key to replace.
First Generation Late (JA Platform)
A transponder key with a Texas Crypto 4D (ID4D64) chip, but still no remote buttons. Dodge added the Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM) this year, which means your key has to communicate with the car's computer before it will start. Programming is done on-board, but it requires a 4-digit PIN code.
Second Generation Sedan (JR/LR Platform)
A remote head key with an ID46 chip and three buttons for lock, unlock, and trunk. The battery is a CR2032, and the SKIM immobilizer system carries over. Programming happens through the OBD-II port, which is the diagnostic connector under your dash.
Second Generation Coupe
A remote head key identical in function to the sedan: ID46 chip, three buttons, CR2032 battery, and the same SKIM immobilizer. The coupe shares the same key system across all trims, including ES and R/T. Same programming process, same tools, same result.
Which Key Does Your Stratus Use?
A basic metal key with no chip and no remote. We cut it to your car's code and you are good to go.
Looks like a regular key but has an ID46 chip hidden inside the plastic head. It has to be programmed to your car's SKIM system before it will start the engine.
Your key and remote are built into one piece. Three buttons on top for lock, unlock, and trunk. The ID46 transponder chip inside talks to your SKIM module every time you turn the ignition.
Same remote head key as the sedan with three buttons and an ID46 chip. Coupe and sedan keys are interchangeable across all trims.

Common Dodge Stratus Key Problems
SKIM Module Failure
Your Stratus cranks but will not start, security light on or flashing. the Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM) failing to recognize your key, even though the key is fine. We diagnose on-site in Oxnard or Simi Valley and reprogram or advise on replacement.
Transponder Chip Wear
The ID46 chip in your key head wears down over time. After years of use, the signal weakens and the SKIM rejects it intermittently. One day it starts, the next it does not. A new key with a fresh chip, cut and programmed on the spot, solves it permanently.
Ignition Cylinder Wear
First check on a high-mileage Stratus is the ignition cylinder. If your key sticks, feels gritty, or takes jiggling, the cylinder is worn. Mechanical issue, hitting every Stratus year 1995-2006. We replace on-site without reprogramming your transponder.
Remote Fob Battery Drain
Owners think the key is broken when remote buttons stop. Real problem is almost always a dead CR2032 in the remote head. Your transponder chip still works because it is powered by the ignition antenna. Pop the fob, swap the battery, lock and unlock come back.
Can You Program a Stratus Key Yourself?
No transponder, no immobilizer, no programming needed. You just need the key cut to the right code.
The 2001 JA-platform Stratus uses the SKIM system and requires a PIN code plus professional equipment. No DIY self-programming procedure is available for this one.
If you already have two working programmed keys, you can add a third key yourself using Chrysler's two-key relearn procedure. Insert the first key, turn to RUN for 5 seconds, turn off. Repeat with the second key. Then insert the new key and turn to RUN for 5 seconds. A chirp confirms it worked. This only works for adding a third key; it cannot help if you are down to one key or zero.
You can add a new remote yourself if you have at least one working remote. The process involves pressing buttons in a specific sequence with the ignition in RUN. This only programs the remote buttons, not the transponder chip. You still need a locksmith for the transponder side.

Did You Know?
The Dodge Stratus shared the JA platform with the Chrysler Cirrus and the Plymouth Breeze. Chrysler internally called them the "Cloud Cars" because every model in the lineup was named after a weather pattern. Apparently someone in the naming department really liked looking at the sky.
