Got a call from a guy over at the Rose Shopping Center in Oxnard. He had a 1997 Dodge Stratus parked near the back of the lot and the key had snapped clean off in the ignition. The blade broke right at the bow, so there was just a stub of metal sitting flush inside the cylinder.

The first-gen Stratus uses a standard Chrysler 7-wafer ignition cylinder, and after 25-plus years those wafers get gummed up. People start forcing the turn instead of addressing the bind, and eventually the Y157 blank gives out right at the stress point.
I got the broken piece out with an extractor set, no cylinder damage. Then I impression-decoded the remaining wafers and cut a fresh key right at the truck on my Condor XC-Mini Plus. Tested it in the ignition, driver door, and trunk. All three turned smooth.
He stood there watching the whole thing and said he figured he would have to get the car towed to a dealer for a new ignition. On a 97 Stratus with no chip system, that would have been a tow bill plus a wait for parts plus labor on a car the dealer barely wants to touch. I had him turning the key in under 30 minutes.
He asked for a spare on the spot. Smart move.
