1996 Dodge Stratus
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Can you delete lost or stolen keys from my 1996 Stratus so they no longer work?

This is a mechanical key system, so there are no stored key IDs to wipe and no electronic pairing to undo. If someone has a copy of your old key, the only way to lock them out is to rekey or replace the affected lock cylinders. That means a locksmith re-pins the cylinder to a new code and cuts you a fresh key that matches the new configuration.

Q: Is there a hidden emergency blade inside the key fob for the 1996 Stratus?

No. The 1996 Stratus does not use a fob at all. It came with a plain metal key. There is no remote, no battery to die, and no hidden blade inside anything. You turn the key in the door lock and the ignition the same way cars worked for decades before fobs became standard. If you are locked out, a locksmith decodes or picks the door lock and cuts you a replacement.

Q: My 1996 Stratus key turns but feels loose or sticky in the ignition. Do I need a new key or a new cylinder?

Both are possible, and age is the main factor here. These cars are pushing thirty years old, and the ignition cylinders wear out. A worn cylinder can feel sloppy, get sticky at the start position, or start having trouble reading a key it used to accept fine. A worn key makes the same symptoms worse. Start by trying the key on the door lock.

Q: Can a hardware store cut a replacement key for my 1996 Stratus, or do I need a locksmith?

A hardware store can duplicate it if you have a working key in decent shape. Where a locksmith adds value is when the original key is worn, you are all-keys-lost, or you want the cut verified against the actual lock rather than just traced off an old key. A copy of a worn key is still a worn key. For a car this age, getting a clean cut from the actual lock code is the better move.

1996 Dodge Stratus Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was working out of the Blackstock area of Oxnard on a Tuesday afternoon when a guy flagged me down in a parking lot near a taqueria. He had a 1996 Dodge Stratus, no spare, and he had been carrying a single key for years. His wife finally put her foot down after he locked it inside a second time.

He figured it was going to be complicated. Someone had told him older Dodges needed dealer involvement for keys. That is not true for a car this age, but the myth gets around.

I pulled out my key gauge, read the cuts right off his original, and had a duplicate cut on site. Took maybe eight minutes from handshake to tested key. He turned it over a couple of times himself just to feel sure it was right.

The dealer would have sent him to a hardware store. Some hardware stores would have done fine, honestly. But he got it done in the parking lot without moving the car, and the cut was checked properly before I handed it over. That is the difference a mobile locksmith makes even on a simple job.

Dodge Stratus Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 1996 Dodge Stratus?▼

On a car this age, all-keys-lost is about as simple as it gets. The 1996 Stratus uses a mechanical key with no transponder, so there is nothing to program and no immobilizer to reset. The job comes down to cutting a working key from scratch. A locksmith can decode the lock cylinder directly at your car, pull the key code, and cut you a new key on site. No tow, no dealer visit, no waiting room.
