Got a call from someone over near the Fillmore Historical Museum. She had one key left for her 2003 Dodge Stratus SE, and the plastic bow had cracked clean through. The blade was still fine, but the transponder chip housing was split open with the PCF7936 wafer barely hanging in there by a sliver of plastic. She'd been holding it together with tape for a month.
Her worry was that if she lost that chip, the car was done. And honestly, she wasn't wrong to think about it. Once you lose all working transponder keys on these SKIM-equipped Dodges, the module needs a full reset through the OBD-II port before it will accept new keys. Still doable, just a longer process.
I cut a fresh Y160-PT blank to match her existing blade, seated a new ID 46 chip, and plugged my programmer into the 16-pin connector under the dash. The SKIM on these second-gen Stratus sedans will accept up to eight transponder keys. She only had one registered, so I added the new one and tested it. Crank, start, run, shut down, repeat. Solid.
She asked if she should get a second spare while I was there. I told her yes. Two working keys in rotation means you always have a backup, and adding a key while I'm already on site costs a fraction of what a standalone trip would.
She kept the taped-up original in a drawer. Can't blame her.
