How Chrysler Cirrus Keys Changed Over the Years
VTSS Alarm Era
Your 1995 or 1996 Cirrus uses a standard mechanical key with no transponder chip and no immobilizer. The Vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS) on these years is an alarm system, not a chip-reader. No programming needed; we just cut a new key to match your ignition and you are on your way.
Facelift, Same Mechanical Key
Your 1997 or 1998 Cirrus still uses a standard mechanical key with no transponder chip. VTSS remains an alarm-only system on these years. Chrysler refreshed the trim and electronics but did not add a chip-based immobilizer. We cut a fresh key on the spot, no programming needed.
Sentry Key Arrives
Your 1999 Cirrus is where things changed. Chrysler introduced the Sentry Key Immobilizer system with an ID46 chip, a significant upgrade in security. Still a standard blade with no buttons or battery, but the SKIM module under the dash now requires a specific programming procedure. We pull the PIN and program through OBD-II, no dealer visit needed.
Remote Head Key Option
Your 2000 Cirrus uses the same ID46 chip and Sentry Key system as the 1999, but higher trims got a remote head key with three buttons and a CR2032 battery. That means lock, unlock, and trunk right on the key. The transponder and remote are programmed separately, and we handle both steps on-site.
Which Key Does Your Cirrus Use?
A plain metal key with no chip and no buttons. VTSS is an alarm system on these years, not a chip immobilizer. We cut a fresh key to match your ignition.
Same style as the earlier years. Plain metal key with no chip, no battery. VTSS handles alarm functions but is not a chip-based immobilizer.
Still a standard blade key with no buttons, but now it carries an ID46 chip that communicates with the new Sentry Key Immobilizer Module. More secure than the earlier VTSS system.
Your key has buttons built right into the head for keyless entry. The transponder chip and the remote are two separate systems, so both need to be programmed to work with your car.

Common Chrysler Cirrus Key Problems
SKIM Module Failure
On no-start for a 1999 or 2000 Cirrus, first check is the Sentry Key Immobilizer Module. The SKIM near the ignition reads your transponder. Fails after a battery disconnect or water; car cranks but refuses to start. We diagnose and replace in Oxnard.
Transponder Key Wear
People think their ignition is failing when the real problem is a worn-out transponder chip. On high-mileage Cirrus, the chip in the key head degrades. Intermittent no-cranks. A full key replacement with a fresh chip solves it permanently.
Ignition Cylinder Binding
Your key goes in but will not turn, or sticks on the way out. Worn ignition cylinder, common on 1997-2000 Cirrus that never got lubricated. We rekey or replace the cylinder on-site and cut a fresh key.
Cluster Programming Sync Loss
The instrument cluster on 1999-2000 Cirrus can lose sync with the BCM during key programming. Odometer reads wrong or security light stays on. Communication problem, not a key problem. We use diagnostic tools to resync.
Can You Program a Cirrus Key Yourself?
The VTSS system requires a PIN code and professional programming tools. There is no self-programming procedure for these years.
Same as the earlier models. You need a PIN and OBD-II access to register a new transponder chip. No DIY shortcut exists.
The Sentry Key system requires SKIM module programming with a dealer PIN or professional extraction tool. You cannot add a key at home.
Both the transponder and the remote require professional programming. The transponder goes through the SKIM module, and the remote is programmed separately via OBD-II. Neither can be done without tools.

Did You Know?
The 1999 Chrysler Cirrus was the only "Cloud Car" on the JA platform to receive a facelift with Chrysler's new winged grille, and it was the first in the lineup to offer the optional Sentry Key theft deterrent system. Chrysler named the JA platform cars after clouds: Cirrus, Stratus, Breeze. Apparently someone in the naming department really liked weather.
