A guy at a weekend swap meet off Channel Islands in Hueneme Center flagged me down. He was selling old stereo equipment out of his trunk and somehow locked his only key inside the 1995 Chrysler Cirrus while rearranging boxes. Thought he needed to call a dealer. Someone at the swap meet told him Chrysler keys had chips in them and it would cost a fortune.
I walked over and looked at the door. Standard Chrysler six-wafer lock, Y157 keyway. No transponder antenna ring around the ignition, no SKIM light on the dash. This car predates all of that.
Picked the door open, got him back inside. Then I offered to cut him a spare right there because running around with one key on a 30-year-old car is asking to end up in the same spot again. I impressioned the lock, cut a Y157 blank on the mobile machine, and tested it in the door and the ignition. Turned clean on both.
He kept looking at the key like I had pulled off something complicated. I told him it was just a metal key, no programming, no computer, nothing electronic. He had it in his head that every car key made after 1990 needed a dealer visit.
Whole thing took maybe 15 minutes, start to finish. He was back to selling speakers before the sun went down.
