How Chrysler 200 Keys Changed Over the Years
Base Transponder Key
You turn this key in the ignition like any other key, but there is an ID46 transponder chip embedded in the head that talks to the Sentry Key immobilizer. No remote buttons, no fob. If the chip does not authenticate, the engine will not start. These base LX and S trims kept things simple, and programming is straightforward through the OBD-II port.
Remote Head Key Era
Higher trims got a 3-button remote head key with lock, unlock, and trunk buttons, plus a CR2032 battery powering the remote functions. The Sentry Key immobilizer still handles security, and the transponder chip communicates with the vehicle every time you turn the ignition. We program these through the OBD-II port in about 20 to 35 minutes.
Smart Key and Push-Button Start
This is where Chrysler stepped things up. The refresh brought a 5-button smart key with proximity detection and push-button start on higher trims. The Sentry Key system got more advanced, and the key uses a CR2032 battery. Programming still goes through the OBD-II port, but it requires more capable tools to sync the immobilizer properly.
Which Key Does Your Chrysler 200 Use?
A metal key with an ID46 chip inside the head. No buttons, no remote. It just starts the car and opens the doors manually.
Looks like a regular key with buttons built into the head. The transponder chip handles starting, and the remote handles locks and trunk from a distance.
A proximity fob that stays in your pocket. Walk up, grab the handle, push the button, and drive. The emergency blade inside gets you in if the battery dies.

Common Chrysler 200 Key Problems
Smart Key Programming Failures (2015-2017)
Replace the fob battery and push-button start will not respond, or alarm goes off mid-drive. The swap knocked the key out of sync with Sentry Key. We reprogram via OBD-II and run a Proxi alignment. Common in Oxnard and Camarillo.
Transponder Chip Communication Loss
People think the ignition switch is failing when the engine cranks but will not start. Real problem is usually the transponder losing sync with the immobilizer, often from water damage or an ECU glitch. We verify chip communication first.
Remote Start Range Degradation
The CR2032 in your fob is first to check when remote start range drops from 300 feet to 50. A weak battery causes this more than anything. If a fresh battery does not fix it, we test the antenna and receiver module.
Key Fob Button Sticking or Unresponsive
People assume the fob is dead when buttons stop clicking. Nine times out of ten, worn internal contacts or moisture inside the shell. We open it, check the board, and a new shell with your electronics solves it for a fraction of a full replacement.
Can You Program a Chrysler 200 Key Yourself?
There is no DIY self-programming procedure for 2011-2014 models. The Sentry Key immobilizer requires professional OBD-II equipment to sync a new transponder. You will need a locksmith or dealer for this one.
Despite the aftermarket EZ Installer products marketed for these years, there is no true self-programming procedure without diagnostic equipment. The immobilizer still needs professional OBD-II tools for full transponder sync. We handle this on-site with our Autel IM608.

Did You Know?
Most people do not know this: the 2015 to 2017 Chrysler 200 offered a consumer-friendly DIY key programming solution through the Smart Simple Key system with an EZ Installer device. It let owners pair replacement keys through the OBD-II diagnostic port in minutes without a dealer visit. That was a rare feature for any vehicle with push-button start, and Chrysler was one of the few manufacturers to offer it during that era.
