Over in Rancho Conejo, I got a call from a woman who'd been dealing with her 2017 Chrysler 200 for three days before she reached out.
The car would start sometimes, lock sometimes, and twice it just sat there with a key-not-detected warning on the dash while the fob was sitting right in her hand. She'd already replaced the battery herself. Bought the CR2032 from a drugstore, popped it in, and figured that was the end of it.
When I got there, the fob was doing exactly what she described. Inconsistent. The car would acknowledge it, then wouldn't. I pulled the fob apart on the hood of my van and looked at how that battery was seated. The contact on the positive side had a slight outward bow from being pried open the wrong way. The new CR2032 was in there but it wasn't making solid contact. A gentle press on the contact to restore tension, a clean seat on the battery, and the housing snapped back correctly.
Then the part that matters: I didn't hand it back and leave. I walked every door, tested the handle touch unlock on both front doors, worked through all five buttons, and started the car three times back to back with a full shut-down between each start. She stood next to me and watched. About halfway through the testing she said she expected me to be done already.
That's the part I don't skip. It's the part that tells you whether you actually fixed it or just got lucky on the first try.
She didn't need a new smart key, a tow, or a dealer appointment. Just the right diagnosis, done in her driveway.
