Got a call from a transmission shop near Westlake Plaza in Thousand Oaks. A 2012 Chrysler 200 was already up on the lift for other work when the key situation came up. Another locksmith had tried programming a replacement OHT692427AA fob, but the car battery sagged mid-sequence and the SKIM threw a security lockout. The other tech packed up and left.
The shop foreman called me. He sounded tired of explaining the situation.
First thing I did was clamp my jump pack to the battery posts. Stable 12.6 volts, no dips. Then I pulled the fault codes through OBD with my IM608. The SKIM had stored a communication error from the interrupted handshake. Cleared it, confirmed the module was responding clean, and started a fresh key learn from scratch using the 4-digit PIN extracted from the system.
The new fob took on the first attempt. I cycled the ignition three times, tested all six buttons from 30 feet out, verified the transponder handshake with the SKIM by cranking the engine, and let it idle for a full minute watching for the red security light. Stayed off. Good.
I walked the shop team through what went wrong. Battery voltage has to hold steady during the security handshake or the SKIM panics. Simple thing to prevent, but it catches people.
Job ran about an hour and a half, which is longer than normal. But the alternative was a flatbed ride to the dealer and a multi-day wait for a fraction of what they wanted.
