Pre-Facelift Transponder Key
You turn this key in the ignition like any other key, but there is a Texas Crypto 4D-64 transponder chip (Y160-PT blank) hidden inside the plastic head that talks to Chrysler's SKIM immobilizer module. Without that chip handshake, the engine will not start. The early SKIM modules on these years are known for going bad, so if your 2001 to 2005 suddenly will not start, the module itself might be the culprit.
Facelift Remote Head Key
Chrysler rolled the remote buttons right into the key head for 2006, so you get lock, unlock, and panic all in one piece instead of carrying a separate fob. The chip is still an ID46 and the immobilizer is still SKIM, so the security side did not change. The fob design got a little more refined, but under the hood it is the same system.
Late Facelift / Classic Trim
The final two years of the PT Cruiser, sold as the "Classic" trim in 2010, kept the same remote head key with an ID46 chip and SKIM immobilizer. No surprises here. Chrysler did not change the key system at all for the send-off, which makes replacement straightforward for us.

SKIM Module Failure
PT Cruiser cranks but will not fire, security light solid or flashing. Classic failed SKIM (Sentry Key Immobilizer Module), one of the most common problems on every PT Cruiser from 2001-2010. We diagnose on-site and reprogram in Oxnard.
Transponder Chip Recognition Loss
People think the key went bad. Usually not. The antenna ring around your ignition is the real problem on 2001-2006 models. It stops reading the ID46 chip signal, so the car thinks there is no valid key. We test the ring before recommending a new key.
Remote Fob Battery Drain
The internal circuit board on 2006-2010 remote head keys can develop constant signal transmission that kills your CR2032 in days. Replacing batteries every few weeks? The board is the problem. We swap into a fresh remote head key and program on the spot.
Ignition Cylinder Wear
First check on a high-mileage PT Cruiser: the ignition cylinder tumblers. When they wear, the key will not go in fully or will not turn once in. Folks think they need a new key cut, but the blade is fine. We replace and rekey to your existing key.
Can You Program a PT Cruiser Key Yourself?
You can program the remote (lock, unlock, panic buttons) yourself if you have at least one working remote. Turn the ignition to RUN, hold UNLOCK for 4 to 10 seconds, then press PANIC for one second and release both. Listen for the chime, then press any button on each remote you want to program within 30 seconds. This only programs the remote buttons. The transponder chip that lets the car start requires professional OBD-II equipment.
Same DIY remote programming procedure as the earlier years. You need one working remote to enter programming mode. Hold UNLOCK, press PANIC, wait for the chime, then program all your remotes within 30 seconds. But the transponder side, the part that actually lets the engine start, cannot be done at home. That requires a scan tool plugged into your OBD-II port.
Identical procedure to the 2006-2008 models. You can sync remotes yourself with one working remote and the ignition in the RUN position. Transponder programming still requires professional equipment.
