A caterer near Centerpoint Mall in Oxnard called me on a Saturday morning with a van full of food and a remote head key that would not turn past ACC. She had a banquet setup starting in a few hours and the 2008 PT Cruiser was not cooperating. The key had been getting harder to turn all week, then just locked up completely.
I got there in about 25 minutes. Popped the door, used my Y171 Lishi to decode the wafers and verify her cut. The ignition cylinder was binding on worn wafers, which is common on these PT Cruisers once they get past 100k miles. The SKIM light was doing the fast-blink thing on the cluster, which told me the transponder was not even getting a clean read through the antenna ring.
Cut a fresh Y160-PT blade on a new OHT692427AA shell, dropped in a CR2032, connected to the OBD port and ran the SKIM programming sequence through the PCM. That part takes a few minutes because of the timed security countdown the system runs before it accepts a new key. Tested all four buttons, cycled the ignition three times, confirmed the SKIM light went solid then off.
She was unloading trays before I even finished packing up my gear. The whole thing took maybe 35 minutes on site. A dealer would have meant a tow, a wait, and a van full of catering sitting in the Oxnard heat.
