I got a call from Carriage Square in Oxnard on a weekday afternoon. A woman had her 2008 PT Cruiser sitting in the parking lot and it had decided that morning was the last morning it was going to cooperate. The remote had been getting flaky for a week, and then the car threw up a key-not-detected warning and just sat there.
She had not lost the key. It was in her hand. The blade looked fine. The fob was the original, probably fourteen years of pocket lint and California sun in that case.
I pulled in about 30 minutes after she called. First thing I did was try the key myself. Engine would crank, then die. Classic immobilizer behavior, not a dead battery or a starter problem. I opened the remote head unit and the CR2032 was reading low, but that was not the whole story. The contacts inside the key head had enough oxidation on them to cause an intermittent connection between the transponder and the reader ring. These keys take a beating because the fob and blade are all one piece, so every time you twist the ignition you're also stressing the electronics in the head.
I had the right replacement unit in the van. Cut the blade to match her lock, programmed it through the OBD port, and she had a working key in about 35 minutes. Tested start, tested all four buttons, done.
She mentioned the dealer told her to bring it in and plan on leaving it overnight. That was not going to work for her. She drove home with a key that worked.
