A transmission shop near the Esplanade Shopping Center in Oxnard called me about a 2007 PT Cruiser that another locksmith had walked away from. The car was already in for drivetrain work, and the other tech had tried an all-keys-lost replacement while the vehicle sat on a low battery.
That's where it went sideways. The battery sagged mid-programming, and the SKIM module (Sentry Key Immobilizer Module, part number 04727348AA on these) dropped out of its security handshake and threw a fault. The PCM logged a U0168 lost communication code with the vehicle security module. The other tech couldn't clear it. He packed up and left.
When I got there, I hooked my jump pack directly to the battery terminals first. Non-negotiable on any SKIM programming, but especially on a PT Cruiser that's been sitting in a shop. I cleared the stored fault codes through OBD with my Autel IM608, then ran a clean SKIM reset. The 4-button remote head key with FCC ID OHT692427AA has a Philips Hitag2 (PCF7941) transponder inside. Once the module came back clean, the new key learned on the first attempt.
I walked through the issue with the shop guys so they'd flag battery voltage on future key jobs. The whole thing took about an hour and a half, which is long for me, but the alternative was a flatbed to the dealer and a multi-day wait for way more money. I carry backup power and backup tools for exactly this kind of wall.
