Got a call from a woman over in the Rio Lindo neighborhood in Oxnard. Her 2001 PT Cruiser wouldn't start. She turned the key and the SKIM light on the dash, the little key icon, just sat there blinking instead of going out after a couple seconds like it should.
She had already tried the spare key. Same thing. Blinking SKIM light and nothing from the starter.
When I pulled up she was sitting on the front steps with her phone, reading forum posts about replacing the whole SKIM module. Someone online told her the PCM needed to be flashed at the dealer. Another person said the wiring harness around the ignition ring antenna was probably corroded. She had been down the rabbit hole for two hours.
I connected my programmer to the OBD port and pulled the SKIM status. Both her keys had lost their transponder registration. The ID4C chips were fine, the antenna ring was reading them, but the SKIM had dumped the key codes. I have seen this happen on these early Chrysler SKIM systems after a battery disconnect or a low-voltage event.
Re-registered both keys through the diagnostic port. Each one took about ten seconds to learn. SKIM light came on with the key, then went out after two seconds. Normal behavior. Engine fired right up.
Whole job was maybe 25 minutes including the drive. She had been mentally preparing for a tow to the Chrysler dealer and a week without her car.
