Over near Lemon Grove Plaza in Oxnard, a choir director flagged me down in a church parking lot on a Sunday morning. Her 2009 PT Cruiser would crank for about two seconds and die. Classic immobilizer fuel cutoff.
She told me another locksmith had already been out, charged her full price for a new FOBIK, and left when it wouldn't stay programmed. He told her the car had a module problem.
The car didn't have a module problem. It had a locksmith problem.
Chrysler's SKIM (Sentry Key Immobilizer Module) on these PTs requires the correct PIN and a timed security handshake. If you enter the wrong PIN or skip a step in the learn sequence, the key data writes temporarily but never commits to permanent memory. Next power cycle, the SKIM doesn't recognize the key, the PCM kills the fuel injectors, and you're back to a two-second crank-and-die.
I used my Y171 Lishi to verify the mechanical cut was correct, then connected through the OBD port with my IM608. Pulled the PIN from the SKIM, cleared the botched key data, and ran a clean security learn with the full timed cycle. Confirmed the key wrote permanently. Her OHT692427AA had all four buttons responding and the engine held idle without the fuel cutoff.
I showed her the confirmation screen so she could see it was actually learned this time. She'd already paid one locksmith for nothing. I couldn't undo that. But I could make sure the job was done right for a lot less than the dealer would have charged.
